Essential
Dignities
Score every planet in your chart using the full Ptolemaic system. Domicile, Exaltation, Triplicity, Term, Face — five levels of planetary strength that ancient astrologers spent centuries perfecting.
The Ancient Scoring System
Essential Dignities measure how comfortably each planet functions in its zodiac sign. Five levels of strength — from Domicile (+5) down to Face (+1) — determine whether a planet is an empowered sovereign or an exile in foreign territory.
⚜What Your Dignities Reveal
Domicile (+5)
Planets ruling their home sign — peak comfort and natural authority.
Exaltation (+4)
Planets honoured and elevated — maximum visibility and brilliance.
Detriment (−5)
Planets exiled from home — must build strength through creative workarounds.
Total Score
Each planet receives a Ptolemaic score from −9 to +11 across all five levels.
What Are Essential Dignities?
Essential dignities are the ancient scoring system astrologers use to measure how well a planet can do its job in a given zodiac sign. Think of it as a performance review — some placements make a planet’s work easier, and some make it harder.
The system was codified by Ptolemy in the 2nd century CE and refined by Medieval and Renaissance astrologers (most famously William Lilly in 1647). It survived because it works: a Mars in Capricorn (exalted) behaves measurably differently from a Mars in Cancer (fall), and the dignity system explains exactly why.
The key insight is that dignity is not the same as “good” or “bad.” A debilitated planet is not broken — it’s challenged. It has to work harder, find workarounds, and develop strengths that a dignified planet never needs to build. Some of history’s most driven, accomplished people have charts full of planets in detriment or fall — precisely because those placements create friction that demands creative solutions.
🏠 Domicile (+5)
The planet is in the sign it rules — completely at home. It operates with maximum ease, comfort, and authority. Like a king in his own castle.
⬆️ Exaltation (+4)
The planet is in a sign where it is honoured and elevated — functioning at peak visibility and excellence. Like a distinguished guest at a state dinner.
⬇️ Detriment (−5)
The planet is in the sign opposite its domicile — uncomfortable, out of its element, forced to operate by rules that feel foreign. Like an executive in an unfamiliar department.
⤵️ Fall (−4)
The planet is in the sign opposite its exaltation — humbled, diminished, and forced to compensate for what doesn’t come naturally. Like an expert who keeps second-guessing themselves.
The Five Levels of Dignity
Most online calculators only check Domicile and Exaltation. The full Ptolemaic system has five levels, each adding progressively finer detail:
Planet rules the sign. Sun in Leo. Moon in Cancer. Mars in Aries.
Planet is honoured. Sun in Aries. Moon in Taurus. Saturn in Libra.
Triplicity dignity comes from ruling the element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) of the sign a planet occupies. Depends on whether you were born during the day or at night.
Each sign divided into 5 unequal segments by the Egyptian system. The most granular dignity level.
Each sign divided into three 10° decans following the Chaldean order. Barely enough dignity to function.
A planet can hold multiple dignities simultaneously. Mercury in Virgo is both in Domicile (+5) AND Exaltation (+4), giving it a combined score of +9 — making it one of the strongest possible placements in the entire zodiac. Conversely, a planet can be both in Fall and lack all three minor dignities, resulting in a deeply negative score.
Dignities Across the Zodiac
Each sign has a planetary ruler and a unique dignity landscape. Here’s which planets thrive and struggle in each sign.
♈Aries
Ruler: Mars · Exalts: Sun
Aries
Ruler: Mars · Exalts: Sun
Mars commands here with full force. The Sun is exalted — identity burns brightest through bold action. Venus and Saturn struggle in this pioneering terrain.
♉Taurus
Ruler: Venus · Exalts: Moon
Taurus
Ruler: Venus · Exalts: Moon
Venus reigns in sensual comfort. The Moon is exalted — emotions find their most stable ground. Mars and Uranus feel constrained by Taurus's deliberate pace.
♊Gemini
Ruler: Mercury
Gemini
Ruler: Mercury
Mercury rules with curiosity and versatility. No planet is traditionally exalted here. Jupiter finds its breadth challenged by Gemini's need for specifics.
♋Cancer
Ruler: Moon · Exalts: Jupiter
Cancer
Ruler: Moon · Exalts: Jupiter
The Moon rules the waters of emotion and instinct. Jupiter is exalted — growth through nurturing and emotional intelligence. Mars and Saturn both struggle with Cancer's vulnerability.
♌Leo
Ruler: Sun
Leo
Ruler: Sun
The Sun rules with creative sovereignty. No traditional exaltation here (Neptune has modern claims). Saturn feels uncomfortable under Leo's spotlight demands.
♍Virgo
Ruler: Mercury · Exalts: Mercury
Virgo
Ruler: Mercury · Exalts: Mercury
Mercury both rules and is exalted — the sharpest analytical mind in the zodiac. Venus struggles here, as love collides with Virgo's critical eye. Neptune and Jupiter both find Virgo's precision uncomfortable.
♎Libra
Ruler: Venus · Exalts: Saturn
Libra
Ruler: Venus · Exalts: Saturn
Venus rules the art of relationship. Saturn is exalted — structure and fairness combine beautifully. Mars struggles with Libra's preference for negotiation over combat. The Sun can lose itself in the pursuit of balance.
♏Scorpio
Ruler: Mars · Exalts: Uranus
Scorpio
Ruler: Mars · Exalts: Uranus
Mars rules with strategic intensity. Uranus finds revolutionary power in Scorpio's depths (modern attribution). Venus struggles with Scorpio's demand for total emotional honesty. The Moon feels everything at full intensity.
♐Sagittarius
Ruler: Jupiter
Sagittarius
Ruler: Jupiter
Jupiter expands without limit — faith, philosophy, adventure. No traditional exaltation. Mercury struggles with Sagittarius's impatience for details and need for meaning over precision.
♑Capricorn
Ruler: Saturn · Exalts: Mars
Capricorn
Ruler: Saturn · Exalts: Mars
Saturn builds empires here. Mars is exalted — ambition finds its most disciplined and effective expression. The Moon feels emotionally constricted. Jupiter's optimism collides with Capricorn's realism.
♒Aquarius
Ruler: Saturn
Aquarius
Ruler: Saturn
Saturn (traditional ruler) structures collective vision. No traditional exaltation. The Sun struggles with Aquarius's preference for the group over the individual. Leo themes feel foreign here.
♓Pisces
Ruler: Jupiter · Exalts: Venus
Pisces
Ruler: Jupiter · Exalts: Venus
Jupiter expands through spiritual depth and compassion. Venus is exalted — love becomes unconditional and transcendent. Mercury struggles with Pisces's nonlinear, imagistic thinking.
Dignity ≠ Destiny
A low dignity score does not mean a planet is “bad” in your chart. Some of the most productive, creative, and transformative expressions of a planet come from placements in detriment or fall.
Why? Because a planet that can’t coast on home advantage has to develop skills, workarounds, and resilience that a comfortable planet never needs. Venus in Aries may be in detriment, but it produces passionate, direct lovers who chase what they want without game-playing. Mars in Cancer may be in fall, but it produces fierce protectors who fight for the people they love. The score tells you how a planet functions — not whether it functions well or badly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are essential dignities in astrology?
Essential dignities are a traditional scoring system from Hellenistic and Medieval astrology that measures how comfortably a planet functions in a given zodiac sign. The five levels — Domicile, Exaltation, Triplicity, Term, and Face — determine whether a planet is strong, neutral, or challenged. It's been in continuous use for nearly 2,000 years.
What does it mean if a planet is peregrine?
A peregrine planet holds no essential dignity or debility in its sign — it's a stranger in a foreign land, without home advantage or hostile conditions. William Lilly compared it to a traveller in a country where they know no one. Peregrine planets are self-reliant and adaptable, but they lack the support that comes from being in a familiar sign.
Is a debilitated planet always a problem?
No. A planet in Detriment or Fall is challenged, not broken. It has to work harder and find creative workarounds, which often produces stronger, more resilient expressions. Many accomplished people have charts full of debilitated planets — the friction creates drive. The score shows how easily a planet expresses itself, not how valuable it is in your life.
Why does this calculator ask for birth time?
Birth time determines whether you have a Day Chart or Night Chart (sect). Sect matters because Triplicity rulers — the third level of dignity — change depending on whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at birth. Without birth time, the Triplicity scores may be approximate.
