Day Chart or
Night Chart?

Sect is the most foundational concept in Hellenistic astrology — and the one modern astrology most commonly ignores. Were you born in the light or the dark? The answer changes everything.

⚠ Birth time is essential — sect depends on the Sun's position relative to the horizon

☀️🌙

Two Teams, One Chart

Sect determines which planets are naturally supported in your chart and which require more conscious work. Birth time is essential — the calculation depends on whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at the moment of your birth.

What Your Sect Reveals

☀️

Day Chart

Sun, Jupiter, Saturn are your team. Jupiter is your strongest benefic; Mars is your most challenging malefic.

🌙

Night Chart

Moon, Venus, Mars are your team. Venus is your strongest benefic; Saturn is your most challenging malefic.

What Is Sect?

Sect (Latin: secta, “faction” or “party”) is the single most important concept in Hellenistic astrology that modern Western astrology largely abandoned — and that traditional astrologers in the 21st century have been working to restore.

The idea is simple and profound: were you born during the day or at night? This determines which planets are on your “team” (in sect) and which are operating against their natural grain (out of sect). A planet in sect performs better — benefics are more purely beneficial, malefics are less harmful. A planet out of sect performs with more friction — benefics carry more shadow, malefics are more disruptive.

☀️ Day Team (Diurnal)

  • Sun — primary luminary
  • Jupiter — Greater Benefic
  • Saturn — Greater Malefic

🌙 Night Team (Nocturnal)

  • Moon — primary luminary
  • Venus — Lesser Benefic
  • Mars — Lesser Malefic

Mercury is considered sect-neutral — it adapts to the chart it is placed in. When Mercury rises before the Sun, it leans diurnal; when it rises after, it leans nocturnal. In practice, Mercury performs adequately in either sect.

The 6 Sect Planets

Each planet behaves differently depending on whether it is in or out of sect. Expand any planet for an overview.

☀️

Sun

☀️ Day Team · Benefic

✓ In Sect

The Sun in a day chart is fully empowered — your core identity, willpower, and life direction operate with natural authority.

✗ Out of Sect

The Sun in a night chart still provides identity and will, but with more friction.

🌙

Moon

🌙 Night Team · Benefic

✓ In Sect

The Moon in a night chart is fully at home — your emotional intelligence, intuition, and instinctive responses are your greatest assets.

✗ Out of Sect

The Moon in a day chart still operates, but emotional life requires more conscious work.

🪐

Jupiter

☀️ Day Team · Benefic

✓ In Sect

Jupiter in a day chart is the Greater Benefic at full power.

✗ Out of Sect

Jupiter in a night chart is still benefic — but its gifts come with more shadow.

💫

Venus

🌙 Night Team · Benefic

✓ In Sect

Venus in a night chart is the Lesser Benefic operating with full grace.

🪨

☀️ Day Team · Malefic

✓ In Sect

Saturn in a day chart is the Greater Malefic operating with constructive discipline.

Why Sect Is the Most Important Thing You're Not Using

Without sect, all Jupiter placements look equally positive and all Saturn placements look equally difficult. With sect, you understand why some people experience Jupiter as effortless abundance and others as overextension — why some people build with Saturn's discipline and others are crushed by it.

Sect is the single biggest predictor of which planet will be your most benefic (best-functioning benefic in sect) and your most malefic (most difficult malefic out of sect). For day charts, Jupiter is the most benefic and Mars is the most malefic. For night charts, Venus is the most benefic and Saturn is the most malefic. This simple division explains more about lived experience than most other astrological techniques combined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about Mercury? Is it day or night?

Mercury is the only planet considered sect-neutral — it adapts to the chart it finds itself in. Traditionally, Mercury is considered to lean diurnal when it rises before the Sun (morning star) and nocturnal when it rises after (evening star). In practice, Mercury functions adequately in both sects, though its morning/evening status can add nuance to its interpretation.

I was born at sunrise/sunset — which sect am I?

If you were born very close to sunrise or sunset, you are at the boundary between sects. Technically, what matters is whether the Sun was above or below the mathematical horizon at the moment of birth — even by a fraction of a degree. TropicalAstro calculates this precisely using Swiss Ephemeris data. If you are within a degree or two of the horizon, your chart may have qualities of both sects, but the calculation is still binary.

Is one sect "better" than the other?

No. Day and night charts each have a different set of advantages and challenges. Day charts have Jupiter as a more pure benefic but Mars as a more difficult malefic. Night charts have Venus as a more pure benefic but Saturn as a more difficult malefic. Neither is inherently superior — they are different operating systems, each with distinct strengths.

Does sect affect outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)?

Classical Hellenistic astrology predates the discovery of the outer planets, so sect was originally applied only to the 7 traditional planets (Sun through Saturn). Some modern traditional astrologers experiment with applying sect to outer planets, but there is no established consensus. TropicalAstro applies sect to the 6 classical sect planets as documented in Hellenistic sources.
