How to Use This Calendar

Each row in the table above represents one void-of-course period. The Moon Sign column tells you what sign the Moon is leaving. Last Aspect shows the final planetary contact the Moon made before going void — the type of aspect, which planet, and the exact time. VoC End is when the Moon enters the next sign and becomes active again.

The practical move: scan ahead for your important dates. If you're signing a lease on March 20th, check whether a VoC window overlaps your signing time. If it does, either move the signing earlier or later. If you can't move it, at least know what you're working with — awareness is half the value.

Long VoC periods (highlighted in red, over 12 hours) are the most disruptive for scheduling. Short ones under an hour often pass unnoticed. The medium-length periods (3-8 hours) are the everyday planning concern — they overlap with business hours frequently enough to matter.

The History of Void-of-Course Moon

The concept goes back at least to Guido Bonatti (13th century), who listed "the Moon being void of course" among the conditions that weaken astrological judgments. William Lilly codified it in Christian Astrology (1647): when the Moon is void, "it shall come to nothing." Both were writing about horary astrology — answering specific questions based on the chart of the moment the question was asked. But the principle migrated into electional work (choosing the right time to act) and eventually into the general astrological awareness of modern practitioners.

Modern Tracking of VoC Moon

In the 20th century, astrologer Al Morrison popularized VoC Moon tracking and studied it empirically. He found correlations between VoC periods and unusual sports outcomes, failed political initiatives, and low-turnout events. His newsletter columns made VoC Moon one of the most widely tracked mundane indicators in Western astrology. Today, business owners, event planners, and everyday practitioners use a VoC calendar as a basic scheduling tool alongside standard planners.

VoC Moon Calendar FAQ

Which aspects count for determining void-of-course?
We use the five Ptolemaic (major) aspects: conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°), and opposition (180°). These are the standard aspects used by most Western astrologers for VoC determination. Some practitioners also count the quincunx (150°) — we don't, following the more traditional definition.
What orbs do you use for VoC calculation?
For VoC, the relevant moment is when the aspect is *exact* — zero orb. We find the precise time the angular separation between the Moon and a planet equals the exact aspect angle. This is different from natal chart aspects, where orbs of 6-10° are standard. VoC is about the last moment of exact contact.
Why do some sites show different VoC times than yours?
Three main reasons: (1) Different aspects counted — some include quincunx or even semi-sextile, which changes the "last aspect" time. (2) Different planets — some skip Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, using only traditional rulers. (3) Different ephemeris precision. We use Swiss Ephemeris (JPL DE431) to sub-arcsecond precision with all nine planets plus the Sun.
How accurate are these times?
The times are computed to within seconds using the Swiss Ephemeris, which is the same engine behind astro.com and virtually every professional astrology app. The precision of the underlying JPL ephemeris data is sub-arcsecond. In practice, you can treat these times as precise to the minute.
Does VoC affect natal chart readings?
VoC is primarily a mundane and electional concept — it applies to the *moment of action*, not to birth charts. That said, horary astrologers do note when a question is asked during VoC, as it may indicate the question won't lead to action. If you were born during a VoC Moon, it doesn't mean your Moon is "weak" — it simply means the Moon had completed its aspects in that sign at the time of your birth.
Do aspects to the Moon's nodes end VoC?
In our calculations, no. We only count aspects to actual planetary bodies (Sun through Pluto). The lunar nodes are mathematical points, not physical bodies, and most VoC traditions exclude them. Some modern practitioners do count nodal aspects — this is a genuine area of disagreement in the astrological community.
