Secondary
Progressions
Your progressed chart for any date: the progressed Sun, Moon, planets, Ascendant and Midheaven, their aspects to your birth chart within 1°, and the dates your progressed Sun and Moon change sign.
Day for a Year
Each day after birth stands for one year of life. For the date you choose, the calculator finds your age in years, casts the planets for that many days after your birth, and compares them with your birth chart.
⏳What the Results Show
Progressed Sun and angles
Where your Sun, Ascendant and Midheaven have moved to, and the dates your progressed Sun changes sign.
Progressed Moon
Its sign and natal house now, when it entered that sign, and when it moves on.
Progressed lunation
The phase between your progressed Sun and Moon, with the dates of your last and next progressed New, Quarter or Full Moon.
Contacts to your birth chart
Progressed planets and angles within 1° of an aspect to a natal one, each with the date it is exact.
What a Progressed Chart Is
Secondary progressions count each day after birth as one year of life. The chart for your 30th year is the sky 30 days after you were born; the chart for your 60th, the sky 60 days after.
The result is a slow version of your birth chart. The progressed Moon moves as far in a year as the real Moon does in a day, between 11°45′ and 15°22′, so it changes sign every two years or so. The progressed Sun moves about a degree a year and changes sign two or three times in a lifetime. Mercury, Venus and Mars move between none and a few signs depending on their speed after your birth, and from Jupiter outward the planets barely move at all; a planet that was about to turn retrograde or direct when you were born may do so in your progressed chart.
Astrologers read the progressed chart against the birth chart: a progressed planet that reaches an aspect to a natal one, a progressed planet changing sign or direction, and the phase between the progressed Sun and Moon. Many treat these as slow inner changes and use transits, the planets' real positions, for outside events. This page explains exactly how the calculator works, walks through a full example for Barack Obama, and gives the tables behind the questions people ask most: when the progressed Sun changes sign, how long the progressed Moon stays in each sign, and when progressed New and Full Moons fall.
How the Calculator Works
Your birth details go to the site's API, which casts the natal chart from the Swiss Ephemeris (the methodology page describes the setup) and then works through these steps:
- Age. The date you choose is read as 00:00 on that day in your birth time zone. The time from your birth to that moment, in days, divided by 365.2422 (the mean tropical year) is your age in years, with its fraction.
- Progressed moment. That many days are added to your birth moment. For Barack Obama's 60th birthday the age is 59.9991 years, so the planets are cast for October 4, 1961 at 05:22:39 UT, to the second.
- Planets. The Sun, Moon and planets are the Swiss Ephemeris positions at that moment, tropical zodiac, with their speeds, so the calculator knows which ones are retrograde.
- Angles. The sidereal time of your birth (the right ascension of the Midheaven) is advanced 0°59′08″ for every year of life, and the Ascendant, Midheaven and house cusps are worked out from it at your birth latitude. Houses are Whole Sign, as on the site's other calculators.
- Aspects. The ten progressed planets, the Ascendant and the Midheaven are compared with the same twelve points in the birth chart for the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition, semi-square, sesquiquadrate and quincunx, within 1°. Jupiter to Pluto are not compared with their own birth positions: even Jupiter moves less than 30° in a century of progression, so the only contact they could make with themselves is the conjunction they start in. Each aspect gets the date it is exact, found by searching five years either side.
- Timeline. From birth to age 100 the API lists every progressed sign change of the ten planets, every progressed New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter, and every progressed station. Each ephemeris moment is converted back to a date in your life: one day of ephemeris time is 365.2422 days of life.
Why the angles are not taken from a chart for the progressed moment
A chart cast for the progressed moment gets the planets right, but its angles turn once around the zodiac for each day of ephemeris time, that is, once a year of life. Half a year after his 60th birthday, a chart for Obama's progressed moment would put the Midheaven at 24°04′ Cancer; the progressed Midheaven by the rule above is 24°23′ Capricorn, almost exactly opposite. On each birthday at the birth time the two agree, and that birthday chart is what casting the progressed day by hand gives. Between birthdays the calculator keeps the angles moving at the same steady rate, about a degree a year, instead of letting them spin.
The progressed Moon's house is counted in your natal Whole Sign houses, as it is usually read: the progressed Moon passing through your natal 7th house, for example.
Worked Example: Barack Obama at 60
Obama's birth certificate records his birth in Honolulu at 7:24 PM (UTC−10:00) on August 4, 1961, which is 05:24 UT on August 5, 1961. On his 60th birthday, August 4, 2021, read as 00:00 Honolulu time, he was 59.9991 years old, so his progressed chart is the sky over Honolulu 59.9991 days after his birth: October 4, 1961, 05:22:39 UT. The example script recomputes every position here with pyswisseph, bypassing the API, and stops if any of them differs.

The Sun has moved 58°11′ in 60 years, from 12°32′ Leo to 10°44′ Libra: slightly less than a degree a year, because the Sun moves more slowly in August and September than around January. It entered Virgo on October 3, 1979 (age 18.2) and Libra on August 24, 2010 (age 49.1), and it reaches Scorpio on January 9, 2041, at 79.4. That 58°11′ is also his solar arc at 60, the figure the Solar Arc calculator adds to every point.
The Moon started at 3°21′ Gemini and now moves about 11°47′ a year. It has been around the zodiac twice, returning to its birth degree on November 14, 1988 (age 27.3) and March 22, 2016 (age 54.6), and at 60 it is at 9°41′ Leo: it entered Leo on October 8, 2020 and moves into Virgo on April 25, 2023. His Ascendant is in Aquarius, so the progressed Moon is in his 7th Whole Sign house.
Jupiter and Saturn were both retrograde when he was born. Progressed Jupiter backed out of Aquarius into Capricorn on September 26, 1968 (age 7.1) and turned direct on January 4, 2011 (age 49.4) at 27°19′ Capricorn; it will not be back in Aquarius until age 90.9. Progressed Saturn turned direct on March 7, 2015 (age 53.6) at 23°14′ Capricorn. Progressed Mercury, at 5°40′ Scorpio now, is slowing toward a retrograde station on April 23, 2028 at 8°01′ Scorpio, and turns direct again on February 11, 2049. Progressed Mars entered Scorpio on March 15, 2019.
Aspects within 1° on the birthday are below, tightest first. The exact dates show which are still building. The tightest, progressed Uranus square his natal Midheaven, is exact on December 10, 2022. Where no date is given, the progressed planet moves so slowly that it stays within the orb for more than five years either way.
| Progressed | Aspect | Natal | Orb | Exact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uranus | square | Midheaven | 0°04′ applying | December 10, 2022 (age 61.35) |
| Mars | trine | Venus | 0°10′ applying | November 4, 2021 (age 60.25) |
| Pluto | sextile | Neptune | 0°21′ separating | beyond five years |
| Sun | semi-square | Uranus | 0°28′ separating | February 8, 2021 (age 59.52) |
| Ascendant | square | Mercury | 0°39′ separating | January 18, 2021 (age 59.46) |
| Saturn | trine | Mars | 0°41′ separating | beyond five years |
| Mars | square | Mercury | 0°42′ applying | August 22, 2022 (age 61.05) |
| Mars | square | Jupiter | 0°45′ separating | June 20, 2020 (age 58.88) |
When Does the Progressed Sun Change Sign?
The progressed Sun moves as far each year of life as the real Sun moves in a day, between 0°57′ and 1°01′, so it changes sign after roughly as many years as it has degrees left in your birth sign. Someone born with the Sun at 25° of a sign sees it move on at about 5; someone born at 2° waits until their late twenties. After that first change it spends about three decades in each sign, a little longer in the signs the Sun crosses around July than in those it crosses around January, because the Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July and moves slowest then.
The table gives the number of days the Sun spends in each sign, averaged over the years 2001 to 2020 from the Swiss Ephemeris, which is the number of years the progressed Sun spends there. The longest stay is Cancer at 31.45 years; the shortest, Capricorn at 29.44.
| Sign | Years | Sign | Years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 30.46 | Libra | 30.39 |
| Taurus | 30.96 | Scorpio | 29.9 |
| Gemini | 31.33 | Sagittarius | 29.56 |
| Cancer | 31.45 | Capricorn | 29.44 |
| Leo | 31.3 | Aquarius | 29.59 |
| Virgo | 30.9 | Pisces | 29.96 |
The calculator gives your own dates: the day your progressed Sun entered its current sign, the day it moves on, and every progressed Sun sign change to age 100. How each sign phase is usually read:
Progressed Sun in Aries: The Initiator Phase
The progressed Sun in Aries is read as a turn toward acting on your own initiative: less waiting for agreement, more starting first and adjusting later. For someone born with the Sun in Pisces it is usually the first change of sign, and astrologers describe it as a move from a receptive temperament to a more direct one.
Progressed Sun in Taurus: The Stabilizer Phase
In Taurus the progressed Sun shifts attention to what lasts: income, property, the body and routines that can be kept up for years. Astrologers associate it with slower, steadier decisions and a clearer sense of what is worth paying for, in money and in effort.
Progressed Sun in Gemini: The Learner Phase
The progressed Sun in Gemini is linked with learning, writing, teaching and a wider circle of everyday contacts. Interests multiply, and the person is described as more willing to change course when a better idea comes along than during a Taurus phase.
Progressed Sun in Cancer: The Nurturer Phase
In Cancer the progressed Sun is read as a turn toward home, family and roots: setting up a household, raising children, caring for parents, or settling where one belongs. Emotional security becomes a stated goal rather than an assumption.
Progressed Sun in Leo: The Creator Phase
The progressed Sun in Leo is associated with wanting to be seen for what you make or lead: creative work, performance, children, positions where you take charge. Astrologers read it as a period of growing confidence and of needing recognition to feel the effort was worthwhile.
Progressed Sun in Virgo: The Analyst Phase
In Virgo the progressed Sun turns toward skill, method and service. The emphasis moves from being noticed to doing the work well: training, specialized expertise, health habits, and attention to detail that a Leo phase may have skipped.
Progressed Sun in Libra: The Diplomat Phase
The progressed Sun in Libra is read as a period in which partnerships, contracts and fairness move to the center. Decisions are made more often with or through another person, and the work is learning where cooperation ends and giving up your own position begins.
Progressed Sun in Scorpio: The Transformer Phase
In Scorpio the progressed Sun is associated with intensity and depth: shared money and obligations, intimacy, loss, and facing what had been avoided. Astrologers describe it as a phase that strips out what no longer works, often hard going but leaving the person more resilient.
Progressed Sun in Sagittarius: The Philosopher Phase
The progressed Sun in Sagittarius is linked with travel, higher study, publishing, law and questions of belief. After a Scorpio phase it is usually described as lighter: more optimism, a longer view, and a wish to teach what has been learned.
Progressed Sun in Capricorn: The Authority Phase
In Capricorn the progressed Sun turns toward ambition, structure and public responsibility. Astrologers read it as a time of taking on authority, working to long deadlines and being judged on results, with more seriousness than in earlier phases.
Progressed Sun in Aquarius: The Visionary Phase
The progressed Sun in Aquarius is associated with groups, causes and independence of mind. Friendships and networks matter more than before, conventions are questioned, and the person is described as more comfortable standing apart from the majority.
Progressed Sun in Pisces: The Dreamer Phase
In Pisces the progressed Sun is read as a turn inward: imagination, spiritual practice, compassion and art come forward, and firm boundaries between self and others loosen. Astrologers note the risk of drift as well as the gain in sensitivity.
The Progressed Moon Through the Signs
The progressed Moon is the fastest moving point in the progressed chart and the one astrologers time most by. Its pace depends on the real Moon's speed in the weeks after your birth, which varies with its distance from Earth. Measured from every lunar sign change between 1950 and 2050, a sign takes the progressed Moon 1.95 to 2.55 years, 2.28 on average, and a full circle back to its birth degree takes 27.22 to 27.47 years. So most people have a progressed Moon return in their late twenties and another in their mid-fifties.
Obama's second circuit, from his first progressed Moon return to his early sixties, shows the uneven pace: Pisces took 2.00 years and Leo 2.54.
| Progressed Moon enters | Date | Age | Years in sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini (its birth sign) | August 11, 1988 | 27.02 | 2.38 |
| Cancer | December 28, 1990 | 29.40 | 2.50 |
| Leo | June 29, 1993 | 31.90 | 2.54 |
| Virgo | January 14, 1996 | 34.45 | 2.52 |
| Libra | July 22, 1998 | 36.96 | 2.45 |
| Scorpio | January 3, 2001 | 39.42 | 2.36 |
| Sagittarius | May 13, 2003 | 41.77 | 2.24 |
| Capricorn | August 8, 2005 | 44.01 | 2.13 |
| Aquarius | September 24, 2007 | 46.14 | 2.04 |
| Pisces | October 7, 2009 | 48.17 | 2.00 |
| Aries | October 8, 2011 | 50.18 | 2.04 |
| Taurus | October 23, 2013 | 52.22 | 2.16 |
| Gemini | December 21, 2015 | 54.38 | 2.32 |
| Cancer | April 18, 2018 | 56.70 | 2.48 |
| Leo | October 8, 2020 | 59.18 | 2.54 |
| Virgo | April 25, 2023 | 61.72 | 2.51 |
ArMoon in Aries: Emotional Awakening
The progressed Moon in Aries is read as a restless, impatient stretch in which feelings turn quickly into action. Fresh starts in relationships, work or living arrangements are typical themes, and the work is to direct the impulse rather than act on every one.
TaMoon in Taurus: Emotional Grounding
In Taurus the progressed Moon slows down after Aries. Comfort, money, physical affection and familiar routines are what steady you, and astrologers describe a growing patience with feelings that take time to settle.
GeMoon in Gemini: Emotional Curiosity
The progressed Moon in Gemini is associated with talking things through: conversation, writing, short trips and a busier social calendar. It is often named as a good stretch for journaling, study or counseling, anything that puts feelings into words.
CaMoon in Cancer: Emotional Homecoming
Cancer is the Moon's own sign, and the progressed Moon here is read as a period centered on home and family: moving, renovating, children, parents, or old memories coming back. Astrologers count it among the most personal stretches of the cycle.
LeMoon in Leo: Emotional Expression
In Leo the progressed Moon wants feelings seen and returned. Romance, creative projects, time with children and play are the usual themes, along with a need for appreciation that can be generous or demanding.
ViMoon in Virgo: Emotional Refinement
The progressed Moon in Virgo is read as a practical stretch: sorting out health, routines and work habits, and handling feelings by solving problems. Being useful to others tends to feel better than being comforted by them.
LiMoon in Libra: Emotional Partnership
In Libra the progressed Moon puts partnerships at the center. A significant relationship may begin, end or be renegotiated, and well-being depends more than usual on whether things feel fair between you and the people closest to you.
ScMoon in Scorpio: Emotional Depth
The progressed Moon in Scorpio is associated with intensity: intimacy, jealousy, loss, shared money and old patterns that come up to be dealt with. Astrologers describe it as demanding, and as the stretch in which avoided feelings get faced.
SaMoon in Sagittarius: Emotional Expansion
In Sagittarius the progressed Moon is read as relief after Scorpio. Travel, study, teaching and questions of belief feed you, and anything that feels confining, from a routine to a relationship, is harder to put up with.
CaMoon in Capricorn: Emotional Maturity
The progressed Moon in Capricorn is associated with responsibility and restraint: more work, long-term planning, dealings with authority or parents, and learning to rely on yourself for security instead of looking for it from others.
AqMoon in Aquarius: Emotional Liberation
In Aquarius the progressed Moon takes a step back from feeling to look at it from a distance. Friends, groups and causes can matter more than one close bond, and habits that have become confining are questioned.
PiMoon in Pisces: Emotional Dissolution
The progressed Moon in Pisces is read as the end of a cycle: heightened sensitivity, vivid dreams, compassion, and the release of old grievances before the Moon reaches Aries again. Rest, art and retreat are the usual recommendations.
Progressed New Moon and Full Moon
Because the progressed Moon moves much faster than the progressed Sun, it laps it, and the angle between them runs through the same phases as the Moon in the sky: New Moon when the two meet, Full Moon when they are opposite. One lap takes as many years as a lunar month takes days, 29.28 to 29.83 (29.53 on average, from 1,236 lunations between 1950 and 2050). Dane Rudhyar divided the cycle into eight phases of 45° each, New, Crescent, First Quarter, Gibbous, Full, Disseminating, Last Quarter and Balsamic, and read the progressed cycle as a 30-year rhythm of starting, building, culminating and clearing away.
Obama was born 291° into the cycle, in the Last Quarter phase (270° to 315°), with the Moon 69° short of New. His progressed Moon caught up with his progressed Sun for the first time on October 23, 1967, at age 6.2, in Leo. At 60 the angle is 298°, Last Quarter again, one full cycle later; the next progressed New Moon falls on February 25, 2027, in Libra. The calculator shows the same for your chart: the current phase, the last principal phase and the next one.
| Progressed phase | Moon in | Date | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Moon | 18°30′ Leo | October 23, 1967 | 6.2 |
| First Quarter | 26°12′ Scorpio | October 27, 1975 | 14.2 |
| Full Moon | 2°38′ Pisces | July 2, 1982 | 20.9 |
| Last Quarter | 9°14′ Gemini | April 30, 1989 | 27.7 |
| New Moon | 17°09′ Virgo | June 26, 1997 | 35.9 |
| First Quarter | 24°41′ Sagittarius | March 20, 2005 | 43.6 |
| Full Moon | 1°10′ Aries | November 6, 2011 | 50.3 |
| Last Quarter | 8°09′ Cancer | December 15, 2018 | 57.4 |
| New Moon | 16°14′ Libra | February 25, 2027 | 65.6 |
| First Quarter | 23°34′ Capricorn | July 22, 2034 | 73.0 |
| Full Moon | 0°14′ Taurus | April 6, 2041 | 79.7 |
| Last Quarter | 7°42′ Leo | September 27, 2048 | 87.1 |
| New Moon | 15°45′ Scorpio | October 12, 2056 | 95.2 |
Progressed Angles: Four Methods Compared
The planets in a progressed chart are not in dispute; the angles are. There is no sky to look at for a progressed Ascendant, so each method is a rule for moving the birth Midheaven forward, after which the Ascendant is the one that rises with it at the birth latitude. Four rules are in common use, and the calculator returns all four for your chart:
- Progressed sidereal time (Naibod rate in right ascension), used by this calculator: the sidereal time of birth plus 0°59′08″ a year. Astrodienst's help pages describe the same rule for its progressed charts: the years of life times the Sun's mean daily motion, 0.98564733°, added to the sidereal time of birth.
- Solar arc in right ascension: the birth Midheaven moved in right ascension by as much as the progressed Sun has moved in right ascension.
- Solar arc in longitude: the birth Midheaven plus the solar arc in zodiacal longitude, the same arc solar arc directions use. Astrodienst offers this as “MC from solar arc” and attributes it to the Solar Fire program.
- Naibod rate in longitude: the birth Midheaven plus 0°59′08″ of longitude a year.
| Method | Ascendant at 60 | Midheaven at 60 |
|---|---|---|
| Progressed sidereal time (Naibod rate in right ascension) | 2°58′ Taurus | 23°55′ Capricorn |
| Solar arc in right ascension | 27°43′ Aries | 19°54′ Capricorn |
| Solar arc in longitude | 7°00′ Taurus | 27°05′ Capricorn |
| Naibod rate in longitude | 8°10′ Taurus | 28°01′ Capricorn |
For Obama at 60 the four Midheavens span 8°07′ and the four Ascendants 10°26′. His progressed Midheaven moves about 0°55′ a year at this point and his Ascendant about 1°11′, so the choice of method can move the date of a Midheaven contact by up to about 9 years. The square of his progressed Ascendant to natal Mercury in the table above, exact on January 18, 2021 by this calculator's method, would be years earlier or later by another. The two solar arc methods differ from the Naibod ones because his progressed Sun moved more slowly than average, and the right ascension methods differ from the longitude ones because a degree of the equator and a degree of the zodiac are not the same size near the solstice points.
None of the four is more correct astronomically; they are conventions. The calculator uses the progressed sidereal time because it reproduces the traditional chart for the progressed day at the birth time on every birthday and moves smoothly in between, and because Astrodienst's charts use it by default. If you work with another method, read your angles from that row of the result.
Progressions, Solar Arcs and Transits
Transits are the planets' real positions on a given day, the same for everyone, compared with your birth chart. Secondary progressions move your own chart at the pace of the days after your birth, so each planet keeps its own speed and direction: the Moon races, Pluto stands still, and a planet can turn retrograde. Solar arc directions take only the progressed Sun's movement, 58°11′ for Obama at 60, and add it to every point, so the outer planets move as fast as the Sun.
Astrologers who use all three usually look for agreement: a progressed or directed contact that is exact in a given year, and a transit to the same part of the chart within months of it. The solar return and annual profections are two more yearly frames people combine with them.
Sources and Limits
- Placidus de Titis, Tabulae primi mobilis (1657), translated by John Cooper as Primum Mobile (London, 1814). Placidus called the day-for-a-year motions “secondary directions” to set them apart from primary directions. He presented them as Ptolemy's, but Ptolemy's timing method in Tetrabiblos Book III is a primary direction, with a degree of the equator for each year. A count of days after birth standing for years of age already appears in Vettius Valens's Anthology, Book IX (2nd century).
- Alan Leo, The Progressed Horoscope (London, 1906), a textbook built around the day-for-a-year method.
- Dane Rudhyar, The Lunation Cycle (1967), for the eight lunation phases and the progressed lunation cycle.

- The Swiss Ephemeris (Astrodienst) for every position, and its
swe_houses_armcfunction for angles and cusps from a sidereal time.
The calculator needs an accurate birth time: the Earth turns a degree every four minutes, so a four-minute error moves the progressed angles by about a degree, a year of timing, and a two-hour error moves the progressed Moon by up to 1°16′, about a month. Positions are tropical. The lunar nodes, Chiron and the asteroids are left out of the progressed aspects. The full-precision ephemeris files cover the years 1800 to 2399.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are secondary progressions?
A way of moving the birth chart forward in time in which each day after birth stands for one year of life. Your progressed chart at age 30 shows where the planets were 30 days after you were born. The Moon covers a sign every 2.28 years on average in this scheme, the Sun about a degree a year, and the outer planets hardly move.
How do I find my progressed Sun sign?
Enter your birth data and any date. The result names the sign your progressed Sun is in, the date it entered it, and the date it moves on, along with every progressed Sun sign change to age 100. As a rough guide, the progressed Sun leaves your birth sign after as many years as it has degrees left to cover: Obama's Sun at 12°32′ Leo had 17°27′ to go and reached Virgo at 18.2.
How often does the progressed Moon change sign?
Every 1.95 to 2.55 years, 2.28 on average, depending on how fast the Moon was moving in the days after your birth. It comes back to its birth position after 27.22 to 27.47 years, the progressed Moon return.
What is a progressed New Moon?
The date your progressed Moon catches up with your progressed Sun, which happens every 29.28 to 29.83 years (29.53 on average). The calculator gives the phase between the two on your chosen date and the dates of the last and next progressed New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon or Last Quarter. Dane Rudhyar wrote about the progressed lunation cycle as a 30-year rhythm in a person's life.
Why is my progressed Ascendant different from another website's?
Programs progress the angles in different ways. This calculator adds 0°59′08″ of sidereal time a year to your birth sidereal time, the method Astrodienst also uses by default; others move the Midheaven by the solar arc in longitude or in right ascension. For Obama at 60 the four common methods put the progressed Ascendant anywhere between 27°43′ Aries and 8°10′ Taurus. The result page lists all four for your chart.
What orb does the calculator use for progressed aspects?
One degree, applying or separating, between progressed and natal planets, Ascendant and Midheaven. A progressed planet moving at the Sun's pace covers that in about a year; the progressed Moon covers it in about a month. Each aspect comes with the date it is exact, so you can see whether it is building or fading.
