What Makes a Chart Tropical
Every chart on TropicalAstro uses the tropical zodiac. Its starting point, 0° Aries, is the Sun's position at the March equinox, and the twelve signs divide the year that follows into 30° steps. That ties the signs to the seasons: Cancer always begins at the June solstice and Capricorn at the December one. It is the zodiac of Ptolemy and of most Western astrology.
Sidereal astrology, the standard in India, measures the signs against the stars instead. The equinox slides backward against the stars by about 50 arc-seconds a year, so the two zodiacs now sit about 24° apart under the Lahiri convention. In roughly 8 cases out of 10, a planet in a sidereal chart falls one sign earlier than in a tropical chart.
