Solar Arc Directions

Solar Arc directions advance every planet in your chart by the exact distance the Sun has progressed since birth — roughly 1° per year. When directed planets form hard aspects to natal positions, they reliably coincide with major life events.

What Solar Arcs Reveal

☀️

Directed Sun

The directed Sun advances ~1° per year — revealing your evolving identity.

🌙

Directed Moon

The directed Moon advances at the same rate, tracking emotional shifts.

What Are Solar Arcs?

Solar Arc directions are a remarkably accurate predictive technique that moves your entire birth chart forward in time based on the motion of the progressed Sun.

The formula is straightforward: determine how far the progressed Sun has moved since your birth (roughly 1 degree for every year of life), and add that exact same distance (or "arc") to every single planet and angle in your chart. If you are 30 years old, every planet is pushed forward by approximately 30 degrees.

When these directed planets form tight "hard" aspects (conjunctions, squares, oppositions) to the planets in your natal chart, they reliably coincide with massive, undeniable life events — marriages, career breakthroughs, relocations, or major crises. While transits show the weather, Solar Arcs show the tectonic plates of your life shifting.

📐

Hard Aspects Only

Solar Arc astrology focuses almost entirely on the hard aspects: 0°, 90°, and 180°. These represent dynamic friction that forces concrete events into manifestation.

⏱️

Tight Orbs

Because Solar Arcs move so slowly (~1 degree per year), astrologers use extremely tight orbs. The event will peak when the aspect is within 0.5 to 1 degree of exactitude.

🌍

Outer Planets Wake Up

In progressions, Pluto and Neptune barely move. In Solar Arcs, they move at the speed of the Sun! This allows your outer planets to finally make aspects and trigger monumental life events.

🎯

Solar Arcs vs. Secondary Progressions

The biggest difference is speed. In Secondary Progressions, the Moon races forward while the outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto) stay practically frozen. It's an excellent tool for tracking internal psychological maturation and changing emotional needs.

In Solar Arcs, every planet is locked together and moves at the exact same speed as the Sun. This "wakes up" the slow-moving outer planets, allowing a directed Pluto or Neptune to cross an angle or conjunct a personal planet later in life. Astrologers rely on Solar Arcs primarily for timing concrete, external events rather than just internal feelings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Solar Arc directions?

Solar Arc directions take the progressed arc of the Sun (the exact distance the Sun has traveled since your birth) and apply that exact distance to every other planet and angle in your chart. Roughly speaking, it moves your entire chart forward by 1 degree for every year of your life.

Why are only hard aspects used in Solar Arcs?

Solar Arcs are an event-oriented technique. Soft aspects (trines and sextiles) represent flowing, easy energy that rarely forces a major change. Hard aspects (conjunctions, squares, oppositions) represent friction, pressure, and structural realignment, which is required to trigger massive life events like marriages, career changes, or relocations.

How accurate is the "1 degree per year" rule?

The "1 degree = 1 year" rule (known as the Ptolemaic Key or Naibod Key) is a very good estimate, but the true Solar Arc is based on the actual speed of the Sun on the day you were born. The Sun's speed varies between 57 and 61 minutes of arc per day depending on the time of year. Our calculator computes the precise Solar Arc based on your exact birth data.

Can Solar Arcs predict when I will get married or change careers?

Yes, this is exactly what the technique is famous for. For example, a Solar Arc directed Venus crossing your Ascendant often indicates meeting a significant partner or marriage. A Solar Arc directed Midheaven (MC) squaring your Sun can indicate a massive peak or pivot in your career.
