What the Time Is For

Your age alone gives the house of the year. The sign on that house, and so the lord of the year, depends on your rising sign, which changes every two hours or so, so the calculator needs the birth time and place.

What a Profection Year Is

A profection moves a point of the chart forward one sign for each year of life. Annual profections apply it to the rising sign: the year from birth to the first birthday belongs to the 1st house, the next year to the 2nd, and after twelve years the count comes back to the 1st house. The house you reach is your profection year, and the planet that rules its sign is the lord of the year, often called the time lord.

The technique is old and written down in detail. Ptolemy describes it in the last book of the Tetrabiblos (Book IV, chapter 10): the annual time lords are found by counting from each starting point β€œone year to each sign” and taking the ruler of the sign reached, with months counted at 28 days to a sign and days at two and a third days to a sign. He profects from five starting points, each for its own subject: the Ascendant for the body and journeys, the Lot of Fortune for property, the Moon for states of mind and marriage, the Sun for rank, and the Midheaven for actions, friends and children. Vettius Valens works the technique through in Book IV of his Anthology, and the ninth-century astrologer Abu Ma'shar combined it with the solar return in his book on the revolutions of the years of nativities.

This calculator profects the Ascendant alone and treats the year's sign as a house (an 8th-house year, a 10th-house year), the form in which the technique is usually taught today. The other starting points still work the same way if you want them: count one sign per year from the Sun, the Moon or the Midheaven instead.

How to Calculate Your Profection Year by Hand

You need your age and your rising sign. Then:

  1. Take your age in completed years, your age at your last birthday. A baby is 0 until the first birthday.
  2. Divide by 12 and keep the remainder. The remainder plus one is the house. A remainder of 0 means a 1st-house year; a remainder of 11 means a 12th-house year.
  3. Count signs from the rising sign, calling the rising sign 1, until you reach the house number. That sign is the sign of the year.
  4. Look up the sign's traditional ruler in the table below. That planet is the lord of the year.

With Virgo rising, age 45 gives 45 Γ· 12 = 3 remainder 9, so the 10th house. Counting Virgo as 1, the 10th sign is Gemini, and Gemini is ruled by Mercury. That is the worked example further down.

Only the seven visible planets rule signs in this scheme, so Aquarius years go to Saturn, Pisces years to Jupiter and Scorpio years to Mars. In any 12-year round, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn each rule two years and the Moon and the Sun one each, whatever the rising sign.

The 1st column is always the ruler of the rising sign, the chart ruler, so the chart ruler is lord of the year at ages 0, 12, 24 and every twelve years after. The 7th column is the ruler of the setting sign, and the 10th the ruler of the sign that whole-sign houses treat as the career house.

How the Calculator Works

Your birth details go to our API, which casts the chart from precise astronomical calculations and returns the Ascendant and the planets (see the methodology page). The calculator asks for Whole Sign houses, so the rising sign is the 1st house and each following sign the next house. The rest happens in your browser:

  • Age. Your birth date is read as three numbers (year, month, day) and compared with today's date on your device. Your age is the number of birthdays you have had. The comparison uses calendar dates only, so the result does not depend on your time zone.
  • February 29. In a common year, a February 29 birthday is counted as March 1, the day February 29 would have followed. The solar return for such a birth falls on February 28 or March 1 depending on the year and the birth time.
  • House and sign. The house is the remainder of your age divided by 12, plus one, and its sign is that many signs on from the rising sign.
  • Lord of the year. The traditional ruler of that sign. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are listed if they sit in the sign of the year but are never its lord.
  • Dates. The year runs from your birthday to the day before your next birthday, and the result shows both dates and the house that follows.

Profecting the Ascendant degree by 30Β° a year gives the same sign as counting whole signs, so the two descriptions are equivalent. Taking the sign on the cusp of a Placidus or other quadrant house is a different method, and it can disagree when a sign is intercepted, which is common at high latitudes.

Worked Example: Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs was born at 7:15 PM (UTCβˆ’8:00) on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco; the time is from his birth certificate. Our API puts his Ascendant at 22Β°17β€² Virgo, so Virgo is his 1st house and the twelve signs from it are the houses of his profection years. Each row below lists the natal planets in that sign and the ages it ruled up to 56, his age when he died in 2011.

12thLeoβ˜‰ Sun (5Β°44β€² Pisces)Pluto11, 23, 35, 47

Take his year from February 24, 2000 to February 23, 2001, when he was 45. 45 Γ· 12 is 3 with 9 left over, so it was a 10th-house year. The 10th sign from Virgo is Gemini, ruled by Mercury, so Mercury was lord of the year. In his chart Mercury sits at 14Β°21β€² Aquarius, in the 6th house, and that is where a reading of the year would start. Profecting the Ascendant degree instead gives 22Β°17β€² Gemini: the same sign.

Over the 57 years in the table, Venus ruled 10, Mars ruled 10, Jupiter ruled 10, Saturn ruled 10, Mercury ruled 9, the Sun ruled 4 and the Moon ruled 4. Scorpio (3rd), Capricorn (5th), Aquarius (6th), Pisces (7th), Aries (8th) and Cancer (11th) hold natal planets, so those years also activate the planets in them. Libra (Neptune) and Leo (Pluto) hold only an outer planet, and Virgo, Sagittarius, Taurus and Gemini hold none. With Placidus houses each cusp of his chart falls in the same sign as the whole-sign house (the Midheaven is at 21Β°18β€² Gemini), so a "sign on the cusp" reading would name the same lords.

The table is arithmetic only. It makes no claim about what happened to him in any of those years.

Birthday or Solar Return?

A profection year is a year of life, and astrologers differ on the exact moment it turns. The calculator uses the calendar birthday. Some astrologers turn it at the solar return instead, the moment the Sun comes back to the degree it held at birth, because that is when a new solar year begins astronomically and when the solar return chart is cast.

The two are close but not always on the same date. We computed all 56 of Steve Jobs's solar returns with our API and converted them to San Francisco time. 50 fell on February 24. At ages 1 and 5 the return came just after midnight, on February 25 (1:05 AM and 12:23 AM). At ages 42, 46, 50 and 54 it came in the evening of February 23 (11:51 PM, 11:21 PM, 10:31 PM and 9:39 PM).

The reason is general. The return comes about a quarter of a day later by the clock each year and drops back after each February 29, so over each four-year cycle its clock time wanders across most of a day. Whether yours ever slips to a neighboring date depends on your birth time and on where your birth year sits in the leap-year cycle. The solar return calculator gives the exact moment for any year; if it falls the day before your birthday and you follow the solar return, start your new profection year a day early.

Reading the Lord of the Year

The house of the year says which part of life is in question; the lord says how it goes. Astrologers who use profections usually look at four things:

  1. The lord's natal condition: its sign and essential dignity, its house, and whether it belongs to the chart's sect. A well-placed Jupiter in a day chart promises more than a Jupiter in detriment in a night chart.
  2. Planets in the sign of the year. Natal planets in the profected sign are drawn into the year as well.
  3. Transits. Ptolemy tells the reader to watch the planets' ingresses into the places of the times, singling out Jupiter's ingresses into the places of the years and Saturn's into those of the longer periods. Modern practitioners also follow the transits made by the lord of the year itself.
  4. The solar return. Where the lord of the year falls in the solar return chart for that year, the combination Abu Ma'shar worked out at length.

The house descriptions below give the traditional topics of each place. They are starting points; the lord's condition decides how each year plays out.

The Twelve Profection Years

1

1st House Year: Body and Direction

Ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48… Β· Hōroskopos, the Hour-Marker Β· joy of Mercury

The year comes back to the rising sign, so the lord of the year is the ruler of the Ascendant, the chart ruler itself. Hellenistic authors gave this place the body, health, appearance and the overall course of life. A 1st-house year opens each 12-year round, and modern readers watch it for changes of appearance, health habits or personal direction, with the condition of the chart ruler as the main guide.

2

2nd House Year: Money and Resources

Ages 1, 13, 25, 37, 49…

The second sign from the Ascendant was the place of livelihood: income, possessions, the means to live and the help that supplies them. In a 2nd-house year, traditional readers look to the year's lord for how money comes and goes, and to any planet in the sign for what it brings to earnings and spending.

3

3rd House Year: Siblings, Travel and Learning

Ages 2, 14, 26, 38, 50… Β· Thea, the Goddess Β· joy of the Moon

Hellenistic texts called the third place the Goddess, the Moon's joy, and gave it siblings, close relatives and travel; as the Goddess it was also linked with religious rites. Modern readings add study, writing and everyday communication. A 3rd-house year often shows up in contacts with brothers, sisters and neighbors, in courses and short trips.

4

4th House Year: Home, Parents and Property

Ages 3, 15, 27, 39, 51… Β· Hypogeion, the Subterranean place

The fourth sign holds the point under the earth, the IC, and was given parents (the father especially), the home, land and buildings, and the end of matters. A 4th-house year is read for moves, renovations, family property and the health of parents.

5

5th House Year: Children and Pleasure

Ages 4, 16, 28, 40, 52… Β· AgathΔ“ TychΔ“, Good Fortune Β· joy of Venus

Called Good Fortune and given to Venus as her joy, the fifth place covered children, pregnancy, pleasure and gifts. In a 5th-house year, traditional readers ask about children and births in the family; modern readers add romance, play and creative work.

6

6th House Year: Illness, Work and Duties

Ages 5, 17, 29, 41, 53… Β· KakΔ“ TychΔ“, Bad Fortune Β· joy of Mars

Called Bad Fortune and given to Mars as his joy, the sixth place covered illness and injury, servants and dependents, and labor done under others. A 6th-house year is read for health problems and their treatment, for daily work and for the people who depend on you or on whom you depend.

7

7th House Year: Marriage and Partners

Ages 6, 18, 30, 42, 54… Β· Dysis, the Setting place

The seventh sign holds the Descendant, where planets set, and was given marriage and partners; later authors added open opponents. A 7th-house year is read for marriages, separations and contracts, and for the people who stand opposite you, whether as partners or as rivals.

8

8th House Year: Death, Debts and Inheritance

Ages 7, 19, 31, 43, 55…

Hellenistic texts gave the eighth place death and what follows from it, including inheritance; modern readings add debts, loans and other people's money. An 8th-house year is read for bereavement, legacies, loans, taxes and shared finances, and for fears that the rest of the chart may not justify.

9

9th House Year: Travel, Religion and Study

Ages 8, 20, 32, 44, 56… Β· Theos, the God Β· joy of the Sun

Called the God and given to the Sun as its joy, the ninth place covered religion, divination and dreams, travel abroad and foreign people. Modern readings add higher education, law and publishing. A 9th-house year is read for long journeys, degrees, beliefs tested or changed, and dealings with other countries.

10

10th House Year: Career and Reputation

Ages 9, 21, 33, 45, 57… Β· MesouranΔ“ma, the Midheaven

The tenth sign normally holds the Midheaven and was given action, profession, rank and reputation. A 10th-house year is read for promotions, changes of job, public recognition and dealings with people in authority, judged by the condition of the year's lord.

11

11th House Year: Friends and Benefactors

Ages 10, 22, 34, 46, 58… Β· Agathos Daimōn, the Good Spirit Β· joy of Jupiter

Called the Good Spirit and given to Jupiter as his joy, the eleventh place covered friends, allies, benefactors and hopes. An 11th-house year is read for help from friends and patrons, for groups joined or left, and for goals that depend on other people.

12

12th House Year: Loss, Enemies and Seclusion

Ages 11, 23, 35, 47, 59… Β· Kakos Daimōn, the Bad Spirit Β· joy of Saturn

Called the Bad Spirit and given to Saturn as his joy, the twelfth place covered hidden enemies, loss, confinement and suffering. A 12th-house year closes the 12-year round. It is read for setbacks that come from outside view, hospital stays and retreats, and for finishing what the round started before the 1st-house year begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a profection year?

A year of life matched to one house of the birth chart. Counting from the rising sign as the 1st house, each birthday moves the year on by one sign: the 1st house from birth to the first birthday, the 2nd house in the year after, and so on, returning to the 1st house at 12, 24, 36 and every twelve years after. The house of the year, its sign and the ruler of that sign are read as the year's main themes.

How do I calculate my profection year?

Take your age at your last birthday, divide by 12 and keep the remainder. Add 1 to the remainder to get the house. Count that many signs from your rising sign, counting the rising sign itself as the first, to find the year's sign; the traditional ruler of that sign is the lord of the year. For example, at age 45 the remainder is 9, so it is a 10th-house year, and with Virgo rising the 10th sign is Gemini, ruled by Mercury.

What is the lord of the year, or time lord?

The planet that rules the sign of the profection year, using the traditional rulers (Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius, and so on). Astrologers who use the technique look at that planet's natal sign, house and condition, at transits it makes during the year, and at its place in the solar return chart. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are never lords of the year in this scheme.

When does my profection year start?

The calculator changes the year on your birthday by the calendar on your device, and a February 29 birthday counts as March 1 in common years. Some astrologers start the year at the solar return instead, the moment the Sun returns to its birth degree, which can fall a day before or after the birthday. In the worked example, 50 of 56 returns fell on the birthday itself by local clocks.

Do I need my birth time?

Not for the house: that comes from your age alone, and the table of ages on this page gives it. You do need the time and place for the sign and the lord of the year, because they depend on the rising sign, which changes every two hours or so. A wrong birth time near the edge of a sign gives the wrong lord for every year.

Should profections use whole sign or Placidus houses?

The calculator uses whole signs, the way Hellenistic authors counted: the year moves exactly one sign at a time. Taking "the sign on the cusp" of a quadrant house instead gives the same answer in most charts, but not where a sign is intercepted (contained inside a house) or repeated on two cusps. In the worked example every Placidus cusp falls in the same sign as the whole-sign house, so the two methods agree.
