Frequently Asked Questions

Deep dive into the methodology of your natal chart calculation.

How accurate is the planetary data used in this calculator?

We use high-precision astronomical data sourced from NASA's JPL Ephemeris DE431 — the same data standard used by professional astrological software worldwide.

Our engine calculates:

  • Planetary positions calculated to the arcsecond.
  • Topocentric coordinates (factoring in your specific geographic elevation and location), rather than just geocentric.
  • Star time (Local Sidereal Time) utilized for precise House Cusp calculation, crucial for determining your Ascendant.

Do you use the Tropical or Sidereal (Vedic) Zodiac?

We use the Tropical Zodiac, which is aligned with the seasons (Solstices and Equinoxes). This is the standard system used in Western Astrology.

Note: Sidereal astrology (often used in Vedic traditions) shifts the zodiac backward by approximately 24 degrees. If you are used to Vedic charts, our signs will appear different (e.g., a Sidereal Aries might be a Tropical Taurus).

Which House System determines my life areas?

We currently use the Whole Sign House System. In this ancient and highly effective system, your Rising Sign (Ascendant) defines the entire 1st House, the next sign covers the entire 2nd House, and so on.

Why Whole Sign? It avoids the problem of "intercepted houses" (where a sign is skipped) common in Placidus charts at higher latitudes, offering a clear and definitive topic for each area of your life.

Why is my exact birth time so critical?

The sky rotates quickly. The Ascendant advances 1 degree every 4 minutes.

Without an exact time:

  • Your Rising Sign might be incorrect.
  • The Moon (which moves ~13° a day) could be in the wrong degree or sign.
  • The Houses will not be accurate, meaning we cannot say for sure which life areas (career, home, relationship) are triggered by the planets.

What does 'Retrograde' mean in my results?

Retrograde indicates a planet appears to be moving backward from Earth's perspective. It doesn't mean "bad luck" — rather, it suggests an internalized energy.

For example, Mercury Retrograde in a birth chart often creates a thinker who processes information deeply and reflectively, rather than just communicating rapidly.

Understanding Your Birth Chart

Master the fundamentals of natal astrology with our comprehensive guide to reading and interpreting your cosmic blueprint.

What is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is a celestial snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets against the backdrop of the twelve zodiac signs and twelve astrological houses.

This cosmic blueprint has been used for millennia to understand personality traits, life themes, and potential trajectories.

Unlike daily horoscopes that only consider your Sun sign, a complete birth chart uses your precise birth time and location to calculate your unique Rising Sign (Ascendant), Moon sign, and the house placements of all celestial bodies.

Key Insight: This creates a personalized map that no one else shares—even twins born minutes apart will have different charts.

The 12 Astrological Houses

The twelve houses divide the sky into sectors representing different life areas. Your Rising Sign determines which sign rules your 1st House, and the rest follow in zodiacal order.

Planetary Aspects Explained

Aspects are the angular relationships between planets in your chart. They reveal how different parts of your personality interact with each other.

Conjunction

0° Orb

Planets merge their energies, intensifying both. This is neither "good" nor "bad" but powerful.

Effect: Fusion & Amplification

Opposition

180° Orb

Planets face each other across the chart, creating tension that demands integration and balance.

Effect: Polarization & Awareness

Trine

120° Orb

A harmonious flow between planets sharing the same element. Natural talents often hide here.

Effect: Flow & Natural Ease

Square

90° Orb

Friction and challenge between planets that forces growth through effort and determination.

Effect: Tension & Growth

Sextile

60° Orb

Opportunity aspects that require conscious effort to activate but yield rewards when pursued.

Why Birth Time Matters

The most common question we receive: "Why do you need my exact birth time?"

The answer lies in the Ascendant. The Rising Sign changes approximately every two hours, and it determines your entire house structure.

The Ascendant advances 1° every 4 minutes

Without an Accurate Birth Time:

Rising Sign & 1st House

Cannot be determined accurately

All House Placements

Become unreliable for interpretation

Moon Position

Moves 12-13° per day — may be in wrong sign

Ascendant/MC Aspects

Precise angular aspects cannot be calculated

How to Find Your Birth Time

1Check your birth certificate
2Ask family members
3Contact the hospital

Even an approximate time is better than none, though a time within 15 minutes of accuracy is ideal.
