Cosmobiology Analysis

Midpoints are the exact halfway points between planet pairs. When a third planet sits on a midpoint (within 1.5°), it forms a “midpoint picture” — one of the most precise tools in astrology, developed by Reinhold Ebertin.

🎯What Midpoints Reveal

Midpoint Pictures

When a planet occupies the midpoint of two others, it blends their energies with laser precision.

Hidden Connections

Midpoints reveal relationships between planets that have no traditional aspect.

90° Dial

The Ebertin dial reduces all positions to a 90° arc, revealing hard-aspect midpoints at a glance.

Precision Timing

Transits to natal midpoints trigger events with extraordinary precision — to the day.

What Are Midpoints?

Midpoints are the mathematical halfway points between any two planets in your chart. Developed by Alfred Witte and systematized by Reinhold Ebertin into the school of Cosmobiology, midpoints are considered the most precise and verifiable technique in modern Western astrology.

The basic idea: the midpoint of two planets represents the synthesis of their energies. When a third planet occupies that midpoint (within 1–2° orb), it activates and personalizes the blended energy. This is called a midpoint picture, written as Planet = Planet1/Planet2.

For example, Mars = Sun/Jupiter means Mars sits on the Sun/Jupiter midpoint — activating the confident, expansive drive of Sun/Jupiter with Martian energy, producing bold, successful action. Midpoint pictures are remarkably specific in their descriptions of personality traits and life events.

The 90° Dial

Ebertin’s 90° dial is a technique that reduces all planetary positions to a 0–90° range by taking each longitude modulo 90. This brilliant simplification makes all hard aspects (conjunctions, oppositions, squares) appear as close positions on the dial.

Planets that cluster together on the 90° dial are in powerful hard-aspect relationship, even if their natal positions seem far apart. Transit planets passing through a cluster on the dial simultaneously activate all the natal planets in that group — which is why midpoint transits are so precise in their timing of events.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a midpoint in astrology?

A midpoint is the exact halfway point between two planets on the 360° zodiac circle. It represents the synthesis of those two planetary energies. When a third planet occupies a midpoint (within 1-2°), it forms a "midpoint picture" — one of the most precise and reliable personality and event indicators in astrology.

What is a midpoint picture?

A midpoint picture is formed when a third planet sits on the midpoint of two others. Written as "Planet = Planet1/Planet2," it describes how the third planet activates and personalizes the blended energy of the pair. For example, "Venus = Mars/Jupiter" describes an enthusiastic, generous, and sensually alive love nature.

How tight should the orb be?

Ebertin recommended 1.5° orb for midpoint pictures. Tighter orbs (under 1°) are more powerful and reliable. Pictures with orbs under 0.5° are considered "exact" and represent the strongest midpoint influences in the chart.

What is the 90° dial?

The 90° dial reduces all planetary positions to a 0-90° range (mod 90). This makes hard aspects appear as close positions. Planets clustered together on the 90° dial are all in powerful hard-aspect relationship — conjunct, square, or opposed to each other.
