Smiljan's most famous son carries a Cancer Sun, a Libra Moon and, should the reported midnight be right, a Taurus Ascendant that had cleared the horizon only minutes before. That hour rests on one biography. John J. O'Neill, a science journalist who knew him for decades, began his account of Tesla's life in Prodigal Genius (1944) with a birth at “the stroke of midnight” between July 9 and 10, 1856, but named no record behind it; the baptism certificate in Belgrade, as described, gives the day alone, so the hour stands as a biographer's report, its source not traced. On Smiljan's local mean time, UTC+1:01:14, that midnight equals 22:58 UTC on July 9, 1856. The first degree of Taurus had crossed the eastern horizon less than 7 minutes earlier, and the Sun would reach the IC in under 5 minutes.
The top-ranked feature is that Sun at the foot of the chart, 1°09′ from the IC; of the charts cast for the 1850s, about one chart in 9 has the Sun no more than five degrees off one of the angles. Ranked next, Mercury in Gemini makes no major aspect with the nine other planets, a pattern the same vintage repeats in about one chart in 13.

The ranked list: the Sun at the IC, a solitary Mercury, then Venus
Ranked by prominence and scarcity within the decade, Tesla's Sun near an angle comes first, matched by about one chart in 9, and Mercury unaspected by the planets second, at about one chart in 13. Then come Venus no more than three degrees from an angle (the IC in this case), at about one chart in 15; a rising-sign change within twenty minutes, about 34%; a T-square with at least two personal planets, about one chart in 5; combust Venus, about one chart in 8; Mercury in one of its own two signs, about one chart in 5; and six or more planets in cardinal signs, about one chart in 17. Venus, ruler of the Taurus Ascendant, recurs throughout: beside the IC, at the T-square's apex, in the Sun's glare.
Midnight by O'Neill's account, on Smiljan's own clock
An hour taken from a biography rather than a register is a report, not a record; O'Neill's is the oldest such account traced for this page. The Memorial Center opened at the birth house in 2006 repeats the midnight unsourced, and PBS in 2013 printed it beside a storm story it calls family legend. The baptism certificate, as Tesla Universe describes it, records 28 June 1856, a Julian date that falls on July 10 in the Gregorian, so the midnight opens that day.
No standard time reached the Military Frontier in 1856, so the clock is Smiljan's local mean time, UTC+1:01:14, which is simply the longitude turned into time. Mean time is not sun time: the Sun reached the IC, true solar midnight, about 5 minutes after mean midnight, so a midnight kept by a clock set to the sun would fall that much after the moment charted here.
Taurus occupied the Ascendant for 1 hour 20 minutes, from 11:53 PM on July 9, 1856 until 1:14 AM; a true birth 7 minutes before the recorded one would have Aries rising, while 1 hour 13 minutes of Taurus lay ahead. Push the time later by 5 minutes and the Sun passes into the 3rd house; by 6 minutes, Mercury reaches the 2nd house; by 7 minutes, Pluto crosses into the 12th house. Pull it earlier by 8 minutes and Venus moves into the 4th house. No plausible error touches the Moon's sign, which held Libra from more than a day before the birth to more than a day after it.
The one rival time, 9:00 AM, shows up only in search summaries of SEO pages that could not be opened. Cast for Smiljan it gives Virgo rising and a day chart and moves all ten planets to other houses, though the Moon stays in Libra; nothing supports it.

| Basis for that assessment | The time comes from John J. O'Neill's 1944 biography, written by a science journalist who knew Tesla personally; it gives the stroke of midnight between 9 and 10 July but cites no record, and the baptism certificate, as described, gives the date only. |
| Where the time comes from | O'Neill opens his account of Tesla's life by placing the birth at the stroke of midnight between July 9 and 10, 1856, at the priest's house in Smiljan. The Memorial Center at the birthplace gives the same midnight between 9 and 10 July. The baptism certificate, held by the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, records 28 June 1856 in the Julian calendar (10 July Gregorian), which places the midnight birth at 00:00 on 10 July. |

Venus at the apex of a Moon–Jupiter opposition
The Moon, 14°00′ Libra, faces Jupiter, 8°35′ Aries, 5°25′ short of an exact opposition. Venus, 14°50′ Cancer, squares the pair, 0°49′ from exact with the Moon and 6°14′ with Jupiter, the loosest contact the table keeps. A T-square drawing in at least two personal planets appears in 18% of the decade's sample.
All three corners are cardinal. Modern writers tie a cardinal T-square to strain that seeks an outlet in action and gathers at the apex, here the chart ruler. Opposite Venus, on the side a T-square leaves open, the Midheaven, 16°39′ Capricorn, falls within 1°49′; some authors call that open point the figure's release, and here it holds only as long as the recorded midnight does.

The Sun and Venus on either side of the IC
The IC, on the lower meridian, fell at 16°39′ Cancer. The Sun lay 1°09′ beyond it on the 4th-house side and Venus 1°49′ before it on the 3rd-house side; only 6.6% of the decade's charts put Venus within three degrees of an angle. Moving a degree every 4.3 minutes, the IC lay between the two planets for under 13 minutes.
Traditional astrology gives the Sun's side, the 4th, to land, the father and the close of life, and Venus's side, the 3rd, to siblings, short journeys and letters. Whole Sign houses remove the line: Cancer is the third sign from Taurus, so the Sun, Venus and Saturn share the 3rd house there.
In the Placidus houses the 3rd house gathers Mercury, Venus and Saturn, while Cancer holds the Sun, Venus and Saturn by sign. The Moon shares the 6th house with Mars, Jupiter shares the 12th house with retrograde Neptune, and Uranus keeps Pluto company in the 1st house. Aries and Libra are intercepted, so neither sign begins a house.

Mercury outside the aspect web, and a Saturn–Pluto sextile 0°01′ from exact
Of the 21 contacts in the aspect table, Mercury takes part in one: an out-of-sign sextile to the Ascendant, 4°44′ wide. With the other nine planets it forms no major aspect within the table's orbs, a state shared by 7.4% of charts from the 1850s; in modern readings such a planet is said to work alone, outside the conversation the rest of the chart is having. Counted sign to sign, as Hellenistic astrologers counted aspects, Gemini trines Libra and sextiles Aries, so the Moon, Mars and Jupiter would all see Mercury.
The tightest aspect owes nothing to the hour: Saturn at 5°33′ Cancer forms a sextile with Pluto at 5°32′ Taurus, just 0°01′ from exact; the angle between them shifted by a degree roughly every 8 days. Next come the Moon–Venus square and the Sun's square to Mars, 1°07′ wide. The Moon sat 3°48′ short of a square to the Sun, a phase the Moon phase calculator labels a waxing crescent.

Cardinal signs crowded, fire left to Jupiter
Cardinal signs hold six of the ten planets, spread over Cancer, Libra and Aries, with the Midheaven in Capricorn as well; in the decade's sample, 5.9% of charts have six or more planets in cardinal signs. Mutable signs hold only Mercury and Neptune. In twentieth-century teaching the cardinal mode is about starting things more than finishing them.
Water and earth tie at four points each, the Sun's sign tipping the balance to water, and fire is down to Jupiter. In Marc Edmund Jones's terms the planets make a seesaw, the wider empty arc spanning 151°25′; eight of them lie below the horizon and none in the 7th, 8th or 9th houses.

A night chart whose ruler is in sect but combust
The Sun's depression below the Smiljan horizon was 23°09′, with sunrise still 4 hours 24 minutes off; the chart is therefore nocturnal, and in sect terms the Moon, Venus and Mars belong to it while the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn do not. Hellenistic astrologers would call Venus the benefic of the sect.
That Venus, the chart ruler, stands 2°58′ from the Sun and so counts as combust, though far outside cazimi; combust Venus comes up in about one chart in 8 from the 1850s. Medieval texts rank combustion among the worst afflictions, while some modern writers read it as a planet fused with the Sun's aims. In the strength scores the penalty for combustion outweighs the bonus for sitting on an angle, and Venus ties the Moon and Pluto at 46.
Mercury leads at 81, by domicile in Gemini and the night rulership of the air triplicity, which makes it Lord of Geniture, the chart's dominant planet by this scoring; the cohort finds a domicile Mercury in about one chart in 5. Saturn is last at 23: in its detriment, out of sect and under the beams at 12°15′.
No planet was out of bounds; the Sun, Saturn and Venus lie within a degree of one another in declination, between 22°16′ and 23°13′ north. Neptune is the only retrograde planet, and the Moon was slow at 11.8 degrees a day.

Patents, Niagara and a laboratory fire
The record holds ten dated events, each with its source, from Tesla's landing in New York to his death there; they are set down as history only, with no chart read into the dates.
On June 6, 1884, Tesla arrived in New York from Paris and was hired by Thomas Edison almost at once. Within four years he stood on his own work: US patent 381,968, for an electro-magnetic motor and one of his alternating-current motor patents, was granted on May 1, 1888, and on May 16 he demonstrated the alternating-current motor system before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.
On May 20, 1891, he gave his high-frequency lecture at Columbia College, the first public demonstration of the Tesla coil. Ten weeks later, on July 30, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States, aged 35.
Fire destroyed his laboratory on South Fifth Avenue on March 13, 1895, taking years of notes and models with it. On November 16, 1896, the Niagara Falls power station, built on his alternating-current system, first sent power to Buffalo. Patent 613,809, for radio control of vessels and vehicles, was granted on November 8, 1898, and patent 645,576, for transmitting electrical energy without wires, on March 20, 1900. He died in his room at the Hotel New Yorker on January 7, 1943, aged 86.

Four Cancer Suns nearest, with no second sign in common
Among the databank's pages, none pairs with Tesla on more than one of the big three signs: Sun, Moon and rising. The four nearest share only the Cancer Sun and are ranked by the average distance between their traditional planets and his, from about 35 degrees for Harrison Ford to about 51 for Priyanka Chopra. Nobody on the databank's roster shares his birth date.
Gemini Sun, Virgo Moon and Aries rising by Lahiri
Jyotish counts signs from the stars, and in 1856 the Lahiri gap was 21°51′. Subtracting it moves Tesla's Sun to 25°57′ Gemini; the Moon becomes 22°09′ Virgo, and the Ascendant 11°00′ Aries. Gemini fills up: Mercury, at home there in either zodiac, keeps company with the Sun, Venus and Saturn, and Jupiter slips back into Pisces, one of its traditional homes.

Saturn back at 5°33′ Cancer in 1885 and 1915
Saturn regained 5°33′ Cancer on August 24, 1885, with Tesla 29.1 years old, then slid back over it retrograde on December 18, 1885 and left it behind on May 12, 1886. Its second visit needed one pass, on June 26, 1915, and he did not live to see a third. Jupiter returned seven times in his life, the last in three passes ending on February 14, 1940.

Nikola Tesla's chart: common questions
What is Nikola Tesla's zodiac sign?
Cancer. On July 10, 1856, Tesla's Sun spent every hour in Cancer, so no doubt about the birth time can move it; at the recorded midnight it sat at 17°48′ Cancer.
What is Nikola Tesla's Moon sign?
Libra, whichever hour is used. Out of Virgo at 7:31 PM on July 8, 1856, the Moon kept to Libra until 8:19 AM on July 11, 1856, when Scorpio took over.
What is Nikola Tesla's rising sign?
Taurus, if the reported midnight holds, but only just: Taurus began rising under 7 minutes earlier, so a birth that much sooner gives Aries. The hour comes from O'Neill's 1944 biography, its source not traced.
What ranks first in Nikola Tesla's birth chart?
The Sun at the IC, 1°09′ from that angle; the 1850s sample places a Sun no farther than five degrees from one of the angles in about one chart in 9. It rests on the hour: 5 minutes after the recorded midnight the Sun would have entered the 3rd house, and Venus, ranked third, crossed the IC about 8 minutes before it.
Which planet rules Nikola Tesla's chart?
Venus, as ruler of Taurus. The table puts it at 14°50′ Cancer, 1°49′ short of the IC on the 3rd-house side, combust at 2°58′ from the Sun, with the Moon and Jupiter squaring it in the T-square. Had the birth come 7 minutes earlier, Aries would rise and Mars would take the rulership.
Under Lahiri's sidereal reckoning, where do Nikola Tesla's Sun and Moon fall?
Into Gemini and Virgo. Most Vedic astrologers subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa, 21°51′ for 1856, which leaves the Sun at 25°57′ Gemini; the Moon drops out of tropical Libra to 22°09′ Virgo. The sidereal rising sign shifts too, from Taurus to Aries, with the Ascendant at 11°00′ Aries.
Calculation notes for the Smiljan chart
The moment behind every figure here, 22:58 UTC on July 9, 1856, was worked through precise astronomical calculations for the restored birth house in the Memorial Center, 44°33′ N, 15°18′ E; the houses follow Placidus and the zodiac is tropical. Each rate compares Tesla's chart with random births the same code cast across the 1850s, at cities around the world; it measures frequency, not meaning.
