How to Read Your Astrocartography Map

Astrocartography answers the oldest question in astrology — not when, but where. Learn how to decode your planetary lines and find your power spots across the globe.

"Astrocartography maps out your geographic destiny, showing where in the world your natal chart comes alive."

We look to astrology to understand ourselves, but standard charts only tell us who we are and when things might happen. They don't tell us where. Developed by Jim Lewis in the late 1970s, Astrocartography maps out where each planet was most powerful (angular) at the exact moment of your birth.

Think of your birth chart as a seed, and the world map as the soil. While your core natal chart stays the same, different locations act like different greenhouses, bringing specific parts of your personality, career, or relationship potential into full bloom. If you've ever arrived in a city and immediately felt "at home," or landed somewhere and inexplicably felt on edge, you've likely experienced the effects of Astrocartography.

Navigating the Lines

1

Find your lines.

Each colored line represents one planet at one of the four angles. Vertical lines are MC/IC lines. Curved lines are ASC/DSC lines.

2

Check what's near you.

Scan the map around where you currently live, work, or regularly visit. Look for lines that pass within a 500km radius of your location.

3

Read the interpretations.

Click or select any line to understand what that specific planet activates in your life when you are near it.

4

Look for crossings.

Pay attention to where two lines intersect. These are doubly-activated power spots where major themes converge.

5

Hover for exact details.

In our map tool, hovering over any location shows the precise relocated Ascendant and Midheaven for that exact spot.

The Four Angles

Every planet creates four distinct lines across the globe — one for each of the main astrological angles. The angle dictates how the planet will manifest in your life.

AngleWhat It MeansWhat You'll FeelShape
MC (Midheaven)Where you're seen — your public faceCareer acceleration, public recognitionVERTICAL
IC (Imum Coeli)Where you belong — your rootsDeep comfort, private life, family pullVERTICAL
ASC (Ascendant)Where you become — your self-imageIdentity shift, new self-expressionCURVED
DSC (Descendant)Where you connect — partnershipsRelationships activate, people find youCURVED

The Orb of Influence

A line's influence doesn't stop at a sharp edge — it fades gradually like a radio signal. You don't need to live exactly on top of a line to feel its effects. Here is how distance roughly translates to intensity:

0 – 250 km
250 – 500 km
500 – 800 km
800 – 1100 km
> 1100 km

Understanding Crossings & Parans

When you look at the map, you'll see lines intersecting. A crossing happens where a vertical line (MC/IC) intersects a curved line (ASC/DSC). If your Sun IC line and Mars ASC line cross in a particular city, that location will carry a heavily condensed combination of both planetary energies.

A paran (short for paranatellonta) is a horizontal line of latitude that extends entirely around the globe from exactly where two lines intersect. If two lines cross at 35°N latitude, the entire latitude band of 35°N becomes a paran line. Any city sitting on that horizontal band receives a subtle, continuous hum of those two combined planets, even if they are fundamentally nowhere near the primary lines themselves.

Case Study: The Kardashian Topography

To understand how profoundly these lines can manifest, we can look at the map of one of the world's most famous modern figures: Kim Kardashian. Her astrocartography serves as a textbook example of locational energy.

"Fame, wealth, and security cannot override locational energetics. Your map acts as the literal stage for your most intense life events to unfold."

Jupiter in Los Angeles

Kim's Jupiter line runs straight down the West Coast of the United States. In astrology, Jupiter is the planet of profound expansion, luck, vast wealth, and larger-than-life visibility. It is no coincidence she built a billion-dollar empire without leaving her hometown.

Mars & Pluto in Paris

Conversely, her chart lays heavily challenging lines right across Western Europe. Both her Mars line (aggression, attacks) and Pluto line (deep trauma, drastic transformation) intersect practically on top of Paris. In 2016, Paris was the exact location where she was notoriously robbed at gunpoint in her hotel room.

We all have safe havens and challenge zones written onto our maps. The goal isn't to be terrified of a Mars line, but to know what to expect when you travel there, and leverage the most abundant zones on your map for long-term growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the map?

As accurate as your birth time. We use the same professional-grade astronomical engine that powers top-tier astrology software worldwide. The calculations are exact spherical astronomy, not guesswork.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. A 15-minute error shifts your vertical lines by roughly 200 miles. If your time is approximate, focus heavily on the vertical MC/IC lines (less hyper-sensitive to time) and treat the curved ASC/DSC lines as general directional guides.

What if no major lines pass near me?

That's completely normal. Check your parans. Often, your map implies that your most highly activated locations are places you haven't visited yet.

Should I pack up and move to my Jupiter line?

Maybe. Jupiter lines bring genuine opportunity — but also excess, overconfidence, and overspending. A Saturn line might serve you surprisingly better if you need discipline to build a long-term foundation.
