Rabindranath Tagore's Sun sign was Taurus and his Moon sign Aries; the hour his family recorded puts Pisces on the eastern horizon. Tagore's birth hour is his family's: a horoscope notebook compiled by his nephew Balendranath and quoted by the biographer Prasanta Kumar Pal gives 2:38:37 AM, read here on Calcutta's local mean time, UTC+5:53:26. That hour comes from the family, but not from a paper anyone can inspect today: the horoscope cast at the birth was lost and replaced in 1879, the clock line is in a second, unnamed hand, and we know both papers only through Pal's quotations. Pisces rose over Jorasanko from 1:29 AM to 3:01 AM.
Saturn heads the ranking: at 2°40′ Virgo, about two days out of its retrograde run, it crept forward by about 15 arc-seconds daily, a station that close turning up in about one chart in 15 born in the 1860s. Mars follows, 2°44′ from the IC.

Saturn's station holds all day; Mars on the IC needs the clock
Each feature's place in the list mixes the weight tradition gives it with how scarce it was among random 1860s charts. Of the eight listed, five hold all day; Mars on the IC and both hemisphere counts depend on the hour.
Balendranath's notebook, a horoscope recast in 1879 and three rival hours
Pal's Rabijibani puts the birth after midnight on Monday, 25 Baishakh 1268, still Monday because the Bengali day begins at sunrise, though by the English calendar it was Tuesday, May 7; Prabhat Kumar Mukhopadhyay's biography agrees, without a clock time. Tagore's own copy of the horoscope notation, counted in dandas from sunrise, lands a few minutes later on our reading, enough to tip Mercury, 0°08′ past its cusp, over into the 1st house, with Jupiter dropping to the 5th house, while Pisces keeps rising.
A reset printing of Pal misprints the hour as 2:28:37 AM, which changes no house. AstroSage's 2:27:41 AM, credited to an astrology book, is Indian Standard Time, 35 minutes after the notebook's moment on Calcutta's clock, once Pisces had finished rising. Astrotheme's unsourced 4:02 AM, given there without a source, gives Aries rising and shifts nine planets into other houses.

| Basis for that assessment | The hour is the Tagore family's own: Tagore copied his horoscope's notation into the first manuscript of Jibansmriti, and a horoscope notebook compiled by his nephew Balendranath gives the English-clock time 2-38-37, both quoted by Prasanta Kumar Pal. It is A, not AA, because the horoscope cast at the birth was lost and replaced in 1879, the clock line is in a second, unnamed hand, and we read both documents only as Pal quotes them. |
| Where the time comes from | Prasanta Kumar Pal's Rabijibani (vol. 1, p. 43) puts the birth at 2 h 38 min 37 s after midnight on the night of Monday 25 Baishakh 1268, which was Tuesday 7 May 1861 by the English calendar, at the family house in Jorasanko. He takes the clock time from Balendranath Tagore's horoscope notebook in the Rabindra Bhavana archives at Santiniketan. |

Saturn barely moving in Virgo, Mars beyond the Sun's declination
Saturn, in the 6th house, had ended its retrograde loop so recently that a birth two days sooner would have caught it moving backward (about one chart in 15). Its turn left all eight planets from Mercury to Pluto direct (about one chart in 22). Astrologers who weight stations say a stalled planet's themes linger.
Mars at 22°03′ Gemini, in the 3rd house, lies 2°44′ short of the IC (about one chart in 15) and would drop into the 4th house had Tagore arrived 12 minutes sooner. Its declination, 24°16′ north, passes the Sun's limit by 0°48′: out of bounds, which happens in about one chart in 5. Mercury held the last degree of Aries until 5:57 AM.

Mars square the Ascendant, the tightest contact
Mars squares the Ascendant within 0°24′, the closest aspect. The Sun meets Venus at 1°16′, and each squares Jupiter in Leo (1°37′ and 2°53′), fixed-sign squares that astrologers commonly read as stubbornness under strain. Mercury's trine to Saturn (2°55′) links the last degree of Aries with early Virgo, two signs a quincunx apart, so many readers discount it.

All ten planets under the horizon and none in a water sign
All ten planets sit below the horizon (about one chart in 11), and eight lie east of the meridian (about one chart in 9). They fill 151°55′ from Neptune to Saturn, a bowl. No planet is in water (about one chart in 14): Pisces enters only through the Ascendant, while fire holds five of twelve points.

A night birth in which Mars outscores a combust Venus
With the Sun 34°09′ beneath Calcutta's horizon, this is a night chart whose sect team is the Moon, Venus and Mars. Mars collects 85 strength points, the top score, for term, angle, speed and sect. Venus is at home in Taurus but 1°16′ from the Sun, combust (about one chart in 9); classical texts say combustion masks dignity, and Venus scores 65.

Salvador Dalí shares both lights, José Rizal the year
Salvador Dalí's chart, the nearest here, has the same Taurus Sun and Aries Moon; Audrey Hepburn matches the Sun alone. José Rizal, born June 19, 1861, shares Pisces rising and a Saturn close to Tagore's in early Virgo. No other databank birth shares Tagore's date.
Lahiri places the Moon in Revati, as the notebook does
With Lahiri's offset of 21°55′, the Moon sits at 20°26′ Pisces within Revati, the nakshatra the notebook names, and the Sun at 24°19′ Aries; Jupiter moves into Cancer, its Jyotish exaltation, and Saturn into Leo. The sidereal Ascendant, 0°33′ Pisces, turns Aquarius for a birth 2 minutes earlier, as it does at the reset printing's 2:28 AM.

Questions about Rabindranath Tagore’s birth chart
What is Rabindranath Tagore's zodiac sign?
Taurus. Tagore's Sun stood 16°15′ into Taurus on May 7, 1861, so his Western zodiac sign is Taurus whichever hour of that day is right.
What is Rabindranath Tagore's Moon sign?
Aries: the Moon stood at 12°21′ of that sign, having entered Aries 25 hours 1 minute before the birth, and left 35 hours 41 minutes after, so no clock time that day changes it. Under the Lahiri ayanamsa the sidereal Moon sits in Pisces, in Revati.
What is Rabindranath Tagore's rising sign?
Pisces, by the family's recorded hour, which is fairly reliable: the birth could fall 1 hour 9 minutes earlier or 22 minutes later with Pisces still rising. Astrotheme's unsourced 4:02 AM gives Aries instead.
In sect terms, is Rabindranath Tagore's chart diurnal or nocturnal?
Nocturnal: the birth came 2 hours 45 minutes before Calcutta's 5:23 AM sunrise, and even Astrotheme's later 4:02 AM falls before dawn, so every hour in circulation gives a night chart.
What is Rabindranath Tagore's chart ruler?
Neptune, for modern astrologers, since Pisces rises; it stands 0°44′ into Aries in the 1st house, swift and direct but without dignity there. Traditional practice prefers Jupiter, Pisces's older lord, which sits at 17°52′ Leo in the 6th house, square to the Sun and Venus.
Calcutta mean time, Jorasanko coordinates, Placidus houses
The notebook's hour becomes 20:45 UTC on May 6, 1861, cast for the Jorasanko house at 22°35′ N, 88°21′ E with Placidus cusps; each rate counts random births of the 1860s at cities worldwide.
