Swami Vivekananda's chart pairs a Capricorn Sun and a Libra Moon under Capricorn rising, at an hour that comes from his family. His younger brother Bhupendranath Datta printed 6:31:33 AM in Patriot-Prophet (1954), citing the original horoscope, which we could not see. Versions said to share that source run up to 11 minutes later, yet Capricorn kept rising until 7:19 AM, and the Moon held Libra all day.

Against simulated births of the 1860s, two features lead. Saturn, the rising sign's ruler, stood three days from its retrograde station (about one chart in 15). The Sun, still 3°11′ below the horizon, lay 3°45′ from the Ascendant (about one chart in 9).

A brother's footnote, a two-minute discrepancy and a six-minute rectification

Bhupendranath's page 72 sets the birth in the predawn Brahma muhurta of Makar Sankranti, at 6:31:33 AM. India had no standard time in 1863, so the hour is read on Calcutta's mean solar clock, UTC+5:53:28; computed sunrise came 11 minutes later.

The disciples' Life, from 1979, prints 6:33:33 AM unsourced, probably the same horoscope with one figure misprinted. Its editions from 1933 into the 1960s, and Gambhirananda in 1966, say six minutes before sunrise, about 6:37 AM by our reckoning. In Pramathanath Basu's biography, Rajendranath Ghosh moved a copied horoscope six minutes later, to 6:49 AM, so Capricorn would rise sidereally; by subtraction the copy's time was near 6:43 AM. Tropical Capricorn survives all; houses are touchier. Add 9 minutes and Neptune counts as 2nd-house; add 16 minutes and the Sun turns 12th-house; take away 11 minutes and Mars turns 4th-house.

Basis for that assessmentThe time is the family's own: his younger brother Bhupendranath Datta prints 6.31.33 a.m. and says in a footnote that it is taken from the original horoscope. It is A, not AA, because the horoscope itself was not seen, and other accounts said to rest on the same horoscope put the birth up to about 11 minutes later.
Where the time comes fromBhupendranath Datta's Swami Vivekananda, Patriot-Prophet (1954), p. 72, gives the birth as Monday 12 January 1863, Paush Krishna Saptami, Makar Sankranti, in the pre-dawn Brahma muhurta, at 6 h 31 min 33 s a.m., in the Simla Datta family of Calcutta, and footnotes the hour to the original horoscope. We read it as Calcutta local mean time, about 11 minutes before the visible sunrise.

Mars opposite Jupiter, squared from Capricorn by the Sun and by Venus

The base is an opposition from Mars, 28°16′ Aries, to Jupiter, 25°57′ Libra, and two Capricorn bodies square both ends: the Sun at 21°22′ Capricorn and Venus in the sign's last degree. No major aspect is closer than Venus square Mars, 0°46′. Any T-square appears in about one chart in 6; both of these lie wholly in cardinal signs.

Both T-squares rest on the Mars–Jupiter opposition; the Sun is the apex of one and Venus of the other.

Saturn crawling at 19 arc-seconds a day, its declination near zero

Saturn, exalted at 5°31′ Libra in the 9th house, moved 19 arc-seconds that day and halted about three days later, then turned retrograde (about one chart in 15). Its declination lay within one arc-minute of zero, with nothing out of bounds. The Sun, in the first house, was about to cross the Ascendant (about one chart in 9).

Mars, at home in Aries, sits 2°46′ short of the IC at 1°02′ Taurus; within three degrees, that contact turns up in about one chart in 15. Of the recorded times, only the adopted one keeps it: at 6:33:33 AM the gap is already 3°17′.

A Moon–Pluto quincunx 0°03′ from exact, and the Moon beside Saturn

Closest of all, though minor: the Moon (9°22′ Libra) and Pluto (9°26′ Taurus) sit 0°03′ from a quincunx. The Moon also joins Saturn, 3°51′ apart, and with Jupiter forms a Libra trio in the 9th house. Tradition ties a Moon–Saturn conjunction to restraint and duty in feeling.

Major aspects only, tightest first, so Venus square Mars leads at 0°46′; the closer Moon–Pluto quincunx is a minor aspect and not listed.

Air in five planets, water in none, and a seesaw split

No planet occupies a water sign (about one chart in 14); the element tally finds water only at the Midheaven, in Scorpio. Air holds five of the ten planets (about one chart in 15), the Libra trio plus Mercury and Uranus, and cardinal signs take eight of twelve points. The planets form a seesaw of two facing clusters, none in houses ten to twelve.

A night chart by minutes, with Venus combust and Mars scored strongest

Before sunrise, the ruling sect is the nocturnal one of the Moon, Venus and Mars; Ghosh's 6:49 AM would flip it to day. Venus, 7°40′ east of the Sun, is combust (about one chart in 9); Mercury, 12°20′ away, is under the beams. Mars tops the strength scores at 92; Pluto, retrograde in detriment, comes last.

Saturn regained its birth degree on October 14, 1892, at age 29.8, its only return before his death on July 4, 1902. Jupiter's first return took three passes, the middle one retrograde, ending on August 13, 1875; later returns fell on November 24, 1886 and November 7, 1898.

Questions about Swami Vivekananda’s birth chart

What is Swami Vivekananda's zodiac sign?

Capricorn. At 21°22′ Capricorn, on January 12, 1863, the Sun kept to Capricorn from midnight to midnight; in the Lahiri sidereal zodiac it falls in the last degree of Sagittarius.

What is Swami Vivekananda's Moon sign?

Libra, tropically, 9°22′ into it, at any minute that day: the Moon entered Libra at 1:12 PM, January 11, and reached Scorpio only at 7:31 PM, January 13. With the Lahiri ayanamsa it falls in Virgo, in Hasta.

What is Swami Vivekananda's rising sign?

Capricorn, at the family's 6:31:33 AM. Its span on the horizon ran 5:17 AM to 7:19 AM, and every competing time falls inside that window, so the sign holds whichever version is right.

Which planet rules Swami Vivekananda's chart?

Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, exalted at 5°31′ Libra in the 9th house. It is also the first-ranked feature, being three days from its retrograde station (about one chart in 15). Some astrologers hold that a planet near standstill weighs more than one moving at its usual pace.

Does Swami Vivekananda's chart count as diurnal or nocturnal?

Nocturnal: at 6:31:33 AM the Sun was still 3°11′ below the horizon, with visible sunrise at 6:42:39 AM. Rajendranath Ghosh's rectified 6:49 AM falls after sunrise, which makes the chart diurnal and the Sun a twelfth-house Sun.

How the Simla-house chart and its rates were computed

For the Datta house site, 22°35′ N, 88°22′ E, precise astronomical calculations fixed every body; cusps are Placidus, the zodiac tropical. A rate is the fraction of made-up 1860s births, scattered over all hours and the world's towns, showing that feature.
