William, Prince of Wales has the Sun and Moon in Cancer and Sagittarius rising, by the minute in an announcement made at the time. A London Gazette Extraordinary notice timed the birth at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, “this evening at 9.03 o'clock”. London clocks ran on British Summer Time (UTC+1), putting the birth at 20:03 UTC. The rising sign sits near an edge: Capricorn came up 11 minutes later.

Venus sits at the narrow tip of a yod based on Neptune and Pluto, found in about one chart in 10 from the 1980s. Saturn stood still and resumed direct motion under three days before William was born; a Saturn near a station turns up in about one chart in 14.

The yod and the two stations, four of the eight ranked features, hold at any hour of June 21. By contrast, the Sun on the horizon (the least common of the eight), the Sun on the Descendant and Jupiter at the Midheaven rest on the Gazette's evening minute.

The base pairs Neptune in Sagittarius with Pluto in Libra, a sextile 1°22′ from exact. Venus, at 25°39′ Taurus, is a quincunx from both: 0°07′ from Neptune, the chart's closest contact, and 1°30′ from Pluto. Writers on the yod describe its apex as a point pressed to keep adjusting; this apex is Venus in its own sign and top of the strength table. Neptune, 1°56′ from the Ascendant, ties the rising degree in as well.

The yod: Venus at the apex, Neptune and Pluto a sextile apart at the base.

The Gazette's evening minute against a stray morning time

The minute was read off the scanned Gazette page, issue 49027, page 8215. An unattributed web page, now offline, was reported to give 9:03 AM; the notice's word “evening” rules it out, and that hour would put Leo on the Ascendant, move every planet to a new house and leave both lights in Gemini.

Sun and Moon each switched sign on June 21: the Moon into Cancer at 1:12 PM, the Sun at 6:22 PM, the solstice, 2 hours 40 minutes before the birth, a same-day solar ingress seen in about one chart in 31. Houses are touchier than the rising sign: Venus enters the 4th house if the birth is moved 7 minutes later, Jupiter the 10th house if moved 8 minutes earlier.

Saturn, exalted at 15°30′ Libra, was creeping forward by about 21 arc-seconds a day after its station. Jupiter, retrograde, would stand still within six days; Jupiter near a station appears in about one chart in 11, and tradition treats a stationary planet as emphatic. As chart ruler it also sits 1°58′ short of the Midheaven (about one chart in 15), while the Sun lies 2°37′ past the Descendant in the 7th house (about one chart in 9).

Mercury–Mars and Sun–Jupiter, the two closest trines

The tightest major aspects are trines, Mercury to Mars at 0°14′ and the Sun to Jupiter at 0°22′, and both pairs share an element: Mercury and Mars sit in air signs, the Sun and Jupiter in water signs. Classical authors count such trines among the easy contacts. The Moon also applies to a square with Mars, 4°14′ wide.

Aspects closest first; the Venus–Neptune quincunx of the yod leads the list.

A seesaw with eight planets above the London horizon

The planets from Venus to the Moon face those from Mars to Neptune across two wide gaps, a seesaw. Water and air tie, the Sun's sign tipping it to water; of the ten planets, Venus alone is in an earth sign. At London's latitude the Placidus cusps skip four signs, Cancer among them, so both lights sit in an intercepted sign.

A day chart by minutes, with the Moon combust

Sitting 1°24′ over the western horizon, 18 minutes before sunset, the Sun still makes this a day chart, by a whisker; a Sun that close to the horizon appears in about one chart in 32. Hellenistic writers group Jupiter and Saturn with the Sun as day planets, so all three are in sect here, while Mars, out of sect and in detriment, scores lowest.

The Moon, at 4°57′ Cancer, is 4°51′ from the Sun and combust, as in about one chart in 24; a partial solar eclipse had fallen 7 hours 59 minutes earlier. The Sun's declination, 23°26′, sat at the year's maximum, yet no planet was out of bounds.

Questions about William, Prince of Wales’s birth chart

What is William, Prince of Wales's zodiac sign?

Cancer. The Sun crossed from Gemini at 6:22 PM on June 21, 1982, so the Gazette's evening birth has a Cancer Sun; an earlier birth, a Gemini one.

What is William, Prince of Wales's Moon sign?

Cancer, its own sign. The Moon reached Cancer at 1:12 PM, hours before the birth; an earlier birth would carry a Gemini Moon.

What is William, Prince of Wales's rising sign?

Sagittarius, by an official notice. Its span on the London horizon ran 6:43 PM to 9:14 PM; a birth just over 11 minutes later would give Capricorn.

What ranks first in the chart of William, Prince of Wales?

A yod, with Venus at its apex over Neptune and Pluto, seen in about one chart in 10 of simulated 1980s births; its Venus–Neptune quincunx is 0°07′ from exact.

Under sect rules, is William, Prince of Wales a day birth or a night birth?

A day birth, by a margin of minutes. At 9:03 PM the Sun still stood 1°24′ high and only set at 9:21 PM; the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn therefore form the day team, however late the clock reads.

How the positions and the rates on this page were computed

The hospital's coordinates, 51°31′ N, 0°10′ W, feed precise astronomical calculations, read tropically with Placidus houses and checked against the site's chart API (difference < 0.0002°). A rate on this page is the fraction of simulated 1980s births, scattered over world cities and cast by the same code, in which the feature appears.
