Jawaharlal Nehru's zodiac sign is Scorpio, and Leo supplies both his Moon sign and his rising sign by the 11:30 PM his family gave. That hour comes from his household, at second hand: B. V. Raman reports in Notable Horoscopes that a family rasi chart and a June 19, 1962, letter from the Prime Minister's Secretary both gave 11:30 PM. It is a family's time rather than a birth register's. The clock is taken as Allahabad local mean time, UTC+5:27:23.

Both leading findings concern the Sun at 22°35′ Scorpio: it makes no major aspect to another planet (about one chart in 19), and it lies 3°36′ from the IC (about one chart in 9). The second is the more fragile; 15 minutes later, the Sun would fall into the 3rd house.

A Sun that stands apart leads eight findings

Ranked by weight in a reading and scarcity among 1880s charts, the list runs from the unaspected Sun to Venus in Libra's last degree. Of the eight, four hang on the hour, among them the Sun near the IC and the planets' eastward lean; the other four come from the date.

A Scorpio Sun that no planet reaches

Mercury, the Sun's nearest neighbor, trails it by 13°06′, and Saturn falls 10°30′ short of a square. With no planet inside the orbs used here, the chart ruler joins no major aspect among the ten planets (about one chart in 19). Some modern authors read an unaspected planet as acting on its own; this one still squares the Ascendant within 1°25′. The tightest aspect anywhere is Saturn square Neptune, 0°20′.

Aspects at the family's time, tightest first; the Sun's only entries are with the Ascendant and Midheaven.

Raman's printed time, his rectification and the family's hour

Raman's own entry prints 11:03 PM, and by our calculation his listed positions fit that minute, though he gives no basis. His 1942 rectification from life events gave 11:33 PM, which he took the family's time to confirm. AstroSage reads 11:30 PM as Indian Standard Time, begun in 1906 (11:27 PM local); Astrotheme, as Madras railway time (11:36 PM).

Across those alternatives the Ascendant spans 15°15′ Leo to 22°29′ Leo, the Moon stays in Leo and no planet changes house. Leo rose from 9:52 PM to 12:09 AM; the Moon had moved on from Cancer at 2:25 AM that morning, long before any candidate time.

Basis for that assessmentThe hour is the household's own: a rasi chart from Nehru's family records and a letter from the Prime Minister's Secretary dated 19 June 1962 both give 11:30 p.m., as B. V. Raman, who received them, reports in Notable Horoscopes. It is A, not AA, because we read neither document, only Raman's account of them, and no birth register or horoscope cast at the birth was seen.
Where the time comes fromB. V. Raman's Notable Horoscopes (chart No. 59, p. 318) says a friend in Delhi obtained from the Prime Minister a rasi chart found in the family records, giving 11:30 p.m. and a Cancer ascendant, and that the Prime Minister's Secretary confirmed 11:30 p.m. in a letter of 19 June 1962. The clock is not stated in the letter as quoted; we read it as Allahabad local time, as Raman labels his chart.

The Sun just past the IC, Venus at the edge of Libra

The IC is at 18°58′ Scorpio, with the Sun beyond it in the fourth house, which tradition ties to parents, land and endings. Uranus is next most exposed: a birth 30 minutes later puts it in the 2nd house; Chiron, on the 12th cusp, crosses it in less than a minute. Jupiter, at 23°21′ south, falls 0°05′ short of the out-of-bounds line, and no planet passes it.

Venus, at 29°41′ Libra, entered Scorpio some 5.9 hours after the birth; a personal planet in a sign's final degree appears in about one chart in 5.

Air holds five planets, the east eight

Libra holds Venus, Mars and Uranus; with the slow pair of Neptune and Pluto in Gemini, air signs carry five planets (about one chart in 7). Fire has the Moon alone, though classical temperament doctrine, counting the Leo Ascendant, its ruler and the Leo Moon, still scores the chart choleric.

Only the Sun and Jupiter lie west of the meridian, leaving eight planets east (about one chart in 6), and houses seven to nine are empty: a seesaw with gaps of up to 145°57′.

Venus leads the night chart; Mars and Jupiter are debilitated

With the Sun 82°12′ below the horizon, every candidate time gives a night chart, one in which sect doctrine prefers Venus and Mars to Jupiter and Saturn. Venus, at home in Libra (about one chart in 5), scores a chart-high 77 and is named Lord of the Geniture.

Mars shares Libra in detriment (about one chart in 5) and ties Mercury, under the Sun's beams, for the lowest score. Jupiter, fallen in Capricorn (about one chart in 14) and out of sect, still scores level with the Sun, helped by its term and face. Mars and Jupiter, both debilitated and both swift, square each other, 5°11′ wide.

Saturn and Jupiter returns before May 1964

Saturn's opening return to 3°06′ Virgo, on September 6, 1919, came at age 29.8. The second took three passes, October 17, 1948, to July 9, 1949, with Jupiter's fifth return on December 19, 1948, between them, by coincidence all within Nehru's years as Prime Minister; Jupiter's sixth followed on December 2, 1960.

Questions about Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth chart

What is Jawaharlal Nehru's zodiac sign?

Scorpio. At 22°35′ Scorpio, the Sun sat far enough inside the sign that no hour of November 14, 1889 could move it out; Lahiri's sidereal zodiac agrees.

What is Jawaharlal Nehru's Moon sign?

Leo. The Moon sat 10°24′ past the Cancer boundary, which it had passed at 2:25 AM, 21 hours 4 minutes before the recorded time. Lahiri's sidereal zodiac puts the Moon in Cancer.

What is Jawaharlal Nehru's rising sign?

Leo, if the family's 11:30 PM is close. Leo rose at Allahabad from 9:52 PM to 12:09 AM, which also covers every competing time from 11:03 PM to 11:36 PM.

Was Jawaharlal Nehru born by day or by night?

By night. The Sun had set at 5:12 PM, 6 hours 17 minutes before the birth. In a night chart, sect favors the Moon, Venus and Mars; only Venus is dignified, at home in Libra.

Which planet rules Jawaharlal Nehru's chart?

The Sun rules the chart, since Leo rises, and it sits at 22°35′ Scorpio in the 4th house. It also heads the findings: no major aspect ties it to another planet, which happens in about one chart in 19 born in the 1880s.

How Nehru's positions and rates were computed

Nehru's wheel and tables use precise astronomical calculations for 18:02 UTC on November 14, 1889, set at central Allahabad, 25°26′ N, 81°50′ E, because the family's 1889 house is unconfirmed; houses are Placidus. Each rate is a feature's share in a large sample of 1880s charts cast by the same code.
