Cancer: Shell, Tide and Home

The Moon's own sign starts at the June solstice, the longest day of the northern year. Cancer leads by protecting, and it remembers everything.

The Shell and What It Protects

Don't let the hard shell fool you. Cancer feels everything, remembers everything, and is keeping track of whether you remembered their birthday. They are the friend who shows up with soup when you're sick, and the one who is quietly wounded for a week if you cancel plans without a good reason.

The crab is a good emblem: armor outside, something soft within, and a sideways approach to conflict. Cancer rarely confronts head-on. It circles, waits, tests the water, and retreats into the shell if the response is cold. That can look evasive, but it is a protective strategy, not a lack of courage. When something it loves is threatened, the claws come out fast.

Ruled by the Fastest Body in the Sky

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and changes sign every two and a half days. A sign ruled by it was always going to have changeable weather. Cancer's moods shift quickly, sometimes hourly, and are usually a response to something real that others missed: a shift in someone's tone, the tension in a room, the thing that was not said.

The Moon also governs memory, the body and the rhythm of daily life, and these show up strongly. Cancer keeps the photos, the recipes and the family stories. It notices when someone is not eating properly. It feels time as a cycle rather than a line, which is why anniversaries and seasons matter so much to it.

Jupiter's Exaltation and the Decans of Cancer

Jupiter is exalted at 15° Cancer, in the middle of the sign and inside the term of Mercury. Mars, by contrast, is in its fall here, and it holds the sign's opening term.

The Chaldean faces are Venus, Mercury and the Moon, so the ruler of the sign returns for the final ten degrees. The modern scheme uses the water rulers: the Moon, Pluto and Neptune.

0°–10° Cancer

♀︎ Venus face · Moon (modern) · from Jun 21

Venus rules the first decan by face, while Mars, in its fall here, holds the opening term. The result is tenderness with a defensive streak: warm and hospitable, but quick to retreat at a hint of criticism. Modern astrologers give these degrees to the Moon.

10°–20° Cancer

☿︎ Mercury face · Pluto / Mars (modern) · from Jul 2

Mercury rules the middle decan and Jupiter reaches its exaltation at 15°. Memory and storytelling meet a generous, protective instinct. The modern scheme assigns the decan to Scorpio's rulers, and there is real emotional depth in these degrees.

20°–30° Cancer

☽︎ Moon face · Neptune / Jupiter (modern) · from Jul 12

The Moon rules the last decan by face, so the sign ends in its ruler's hands. Castor and Pollux sit here, near 20° and 23°. Late Cancer tends to be intuitive and imaginative, and modern astrologers link it to Pisces' rulers.

Cardinal Water: Leading Through Care

Cancer begins at the June solstice, when the Sun reaches its northernmost point and seems to stand still before turning back. As a cardinal sign it initiates, but its initiative looks different from Aries' or Capricorn's. Cancer starts families, communities, kitchens and support networks. It takes action through care: cooking for people, remembering details, building the home everyone else gravitates toward.

This is leadership by gravity rather than command. People orbit a Cancer without quite knowing why, and the sign is often the unofficial center of an office or a friend group, the one who knows who is struggling and quietly does something about it.

The June Solstice: Exact Start of Cancer Season, 1930–2040

Cancer begins at the June solstice, when the Sun reaches 90° of ecliptic longitude and its greatest northern declination. In UTC that falls on June 21 in most recent years and on June 20 in the rest.

The solstice time also marks the longest day in the northern hemisphere and the shortest in the southern. If your birthday is June 20, 21 or 22, check your year below.

Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was June 20, 2040 at 17:46 UTC and the latest was June 22, 1931 at 09:28 UTC.

Cancer's Circle: Who Feels Like Home

Cancer is most at ease with the other water signs and with the earth signs a sextile away, which give it a container. Its squares are the other cardinal signs, each convinced its own instincts should lead.

Trine (same element)SextileSquareOppositeQuincunxSemi-sextile

Scorpio and Pisces· Trine (same element)

Scorpio and Pisces share Cancer's water. Scorpio matches its loyalty and intensity; Pisces offers gentleness and imagination. These pairings understand each other without explanation, which is both the gift and the risk.

Taurus and Virgo· Sextile

Taurus gives Cancer security and good food; Virgo gives it competence and care in practical form. Earth contains Cancer's water, and these are among the most supportive, home-making combinations in the zodiac.

Cancer with Cancer· Same sign

Two Cancers build a nest quickly and defend it fiercely, and they read each other's moods well. The danger is that both withdraw at once and wait for the other to come out first.

Capricorn· Opposite

Capricorn completes the axis of home and career, family and status. Cancer looks after people; Capricorn looks after structures. When each values the other's domain, they make a formidable household.

Aries and Libra· Square

Aries pushes ahead where Cancer protects; Libra prizes fairness where Cancer prizes loyalty. Both clash over whose instincts lead, and both can teach Cancer to speak up directly instead of sideways.

Sagittarius and Aquarius· Quincunx

Sagittarius wants the open road and Aquarius wants the wider world and some emotional distance. Cancer wants closeness and continuity. These pairings need explicit agreements about space and time together.

Gemini and Leo· Semi-sextile

Gemini, just behind, keeps Cancer talking; Leo, just ahead, draws it into the light. Neither shares its element, but both coax it out of its shell.

Sun signs are a first read. For two real people, compare whole charts with the synastry calculator.

Home, Family and the Long Memory

Family, chosen or biological, is the organizing principle of a Cancer's life, and threatening it is the fastest way to see the crab's claws. The reputation for clinginess is partly earned, but it is really the intensity of the investment. Cancer does not do casual attachment. If it has let you in, you matter to it in a way that is almost uncomfortably real.

The shadow is the long memory applied to grievances. Cancer can hold on to a hurt for years, replaying it privately rather than raising it. Saturn, the planet of boundaries and plain speaking, is in detriment here, and many Cancers have to learn deliberately to say what they need instead of waiting to be understood.

Pluto Was Found in Cancer: Slow Planets in the Sign

Pluto spent 1912 to 1939 in Cancer and was discovered there, near 18° of the sign, in early 1930. Neptune passed through from 1901 to 1916 and Uranus from 1948 to 1956. None of the three is due back soon: Uranus returns in August 2032 and stays until 2040, Neptune not until 2065.

Jupiter, exalted in Cancer, made its most recent pass from June 9, 2025 to June 30, 2026; the next runs from 2037 to 2038. Saturn, in detriment here, last visited from 2003 to 2005 and comes back from 2032 to 2035.

The Crab Is the Faintest Constellation of the Zodiac

At the start of tropical Cancer the Sun is still among the stars of Gemini, and it stays there until about July 20. Gemini's own twin stars, Castor and Pollux, now lie in tropical Cancer, near 20° and 23°.

The constellation Cancer, crossed in late July and early August, is the faintest of the twelve; none of its stars is brighter than magnitude 3.5. Its best-known sight is the Beehive Cluster, which now sits near 8° of tropical Leo.

Questions About Cancer

What are the Cancer dates?

Cancer runs from the June solstice, on June 20 or 21, to about July 22 or 23. The exact moment the Sun enters Cancer for every year from 1930 to 2040 is listed above.

Why does the Moon rule Cancer?

In the traditional scheme the two lights, the Sun and Moon, rule the two signs of high northern summer, Leo and Cancer, and the five visible planets rule the rest in pairs moving outward. The Moon took Cancer, the sign of the solstice and the start of the Sun's return southward.

Is Cancer a water sign?

Yes. Cancer is cardinal water, the first of the three water signs alongside Scorpio and Pisces. Cardinal signs open each season, and Cancer opens summer in the northern hemisphere.

When was Jupiter last in Cancer?

Jupiter is not in Cancer right now. Its most recent visit ran from June 9, 2025 to June 30, 2026. The next visit runs from May 24, 2037 to June 12, 2038.
