Aries: The Sign That Goes First

Mars rules it, the Sun is exalted in it, and the whole tropical zodiac is measured from its first degree. Here is what that means for the people born under it.

Why Aries Comes First

First sign of the zodiac, and Aries acts like it. Mars rules here, which means action over deliberation, every single time. You won't catch an Aries drafting a pro-con list; they've already started. That cardinal fire energy makes them the people who kick off projects, rally teams, and volunteer for the thing everyone else is avoiding.

The position is not arbitrary. The tropical zodiac is fixed to the seasons, and its zero point is the March equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator into the northern sky. In the northern hemisphere that is the start of spring: longer days, quick growth, the year beginning again. Aries carries that sense of starting from nothing, with no backlog and no precedent to defer to.

The flip side is the same quality seen from later in the project. Aries can start ten things brilliantly and finish three. Beginnings are the native element; maintenance is a foreign language that has to be learned.

The March Equinox: When Aries Begins, Year by Year

Aries begins at the exact moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. The tropical zodiac is anchored to that crossing, so the first degree of Aries is an astronomical event, not a fixed date.

Because a year is about six hours longer than 365 days and leap years pull it back, the equinox drifts between March 20 and 21 in UTC. If you were born on either day, find your year below. If the Sun had crossed before your birth time, your Sun is in Aries.

Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was March 20, 2040 at 00:12 UTC and the latest was March 21, 1931 at 14:06 UTC.

The Mars Engine: Acting in Order to Think

Most signs think, then act. Aries tends to act in order to find out what it thinks. A conversation, a workout, a decision made too quickly and corrected on the fly: these are how the sign processes the world. Sitting still with an unresolved question is genuinely uncomfortable for it.

Mars in its own sign is direct, physical and competitive, and it keeps score whether or not anyone else is playing. That makes Aries excellent in emergencies, early-stage ventures, sport and any field where hesitation is the main risk. It makes them poor at waiting rooms, committees and anything that rewards the slow accumulation of consensus.

In a birth chart, how strongly this shows depends on Mars itself. A Sun in Aries with Mars placed in a quiet water sign often reads as a person with fierce intentions and a slower, more private way of executing them.

Aries Degree by Degree: Terms, Decans and the Sun's Exaltation

Hellenistic astrologers split each sign twice: into five unequal terms, each lent to a planet, and into three ten-degree decans assigned in the Chaldean planetary order.

Aries opens on a term of Jupiter and closes on one of Saturn, the planet in its fall here. The Sun's exaltation sits at 19°, inside the term of Mercury.

0°–10° Aries

♂︎ Mars face · Mars (modern) · from Mar 20

Mars rules this decan as well as the sign, so it is Aries at full strength: speed, nerve and a low tolerance for waiting. People with the Sun here often act before the room has finished talking, and are usually the first to apologize.

10°–20° Aries

☉︎ Sun face · Sun (modern) · from Mar 30

The Sun takes the second decan and reaches its exaltation at 19°. The drive gains purpose and an audience: less sprint, more campaign. This is the part of Aries most associated with leadership that others choose to follow.

20°–30° Aries

♀︎ Venus face · Jupiter (modern) · from Apr 10

Venus, weak in Aries, rules the last decan, and Saturn's term closes the sign. The fire meets taste, partnership and limits. Third-decan Aries often learns diplomacy the hard way, then uses it better than anyone expected.

The Short Fuse and the Quick Thaw

Aries has a reputation for temper, and it is earned. What gets left out is how fast the weather clears. The anger tends to arrive in a burst, say exactly what it means, and leave. Resentment, the slow kind that other signs nurse for years, is rare here because Aries usually said the thing at the time.

In relationships, Aries is direct to the point of bluntness. They would rather have an honest argument than a polite silence, and they read avoidance as dishonesty. Partners who need time to process can feel ambushed; partners who like to know where they stand tend to find it a relief.

The Ram's real growth edge is learning to slow down long enough to consider that other people might have a point, and that being first is not the same as being right.

During Aries Season, the Sun Stands in Pisces

Look up during tropical Aries season and the Sun is not among the stars of the Ram. Precession has slid the equinox point about 24 degrees west since the zodiac was fixed, so for nearly the whole season the Sun sits in front of the constellation Pisces. Hamal, the Ram's brightest star, now lies near 8° of tropical Taurus.

Sidereal astrology, which follows the stars, starts Aries in mid-April. Neither system is wrong. Tropical Aries describes the season; sidereal Aries describes the backdrop.

Saturn and Neptune Arrive: Slow Planets in Aries Since 1900

Through the twentieth century Aries hosted one long stay, Uranus from 1927 to 1935, and otherwise only year-long visits from Jupiter and two-to-three-year visits from Saturn. Uranus came back from 2010 to 2019. Then, in 2025, two slow planets arrived together. Neptune crossed in on March 30 and Saturn on May 25; both slipped back into Pisces later that year, then returned, Neptune on January 26, 2026 and Saturn on February 14.

They met at 0°45′ Aries on February 20, 2026, the first Saturn–Neptune conjunction since 1989. Saturn is in its fall in Aries, so tradition reads its stay to April 2028 as a test of patience. Neptune, last here from 1861 to 1875, remains until 2039.

Aries in Work and Love

At work, Aries is the founder, the first responder, the salesperson who likes the cold call. It thrives on clear goals and visible progress and loses interest when a role becomes pure upkeep. Good managers of Aries give them the opening move and someone else to own the follow-through.

In love, pursuit is affection. Aries courts openly, gets bored by games, and wants a partner who can match its energy without trying to manage it. The sign's traditional weakness here is Venus, which is in detriment in Aries: tact, patience and the slow work of mutual adjustment do not come automatically, and the relationships that last are the ones where Aries decides those skills are worth learning.

Aries With the Other Eleven Signs

Sun-sign compatibility is the bluntest tool in astrology, but it follows the geometry of the wheel. Aries finds natural allies in the other fire signs and its sharpest friction in the other cardinal signs, which also want to lead.

Leo and Sagittarius· Trine (same element)

Leo gives Aries an audience and a peer; Sagittarius gives it a horizon and a travel companion. These fire pairings run hot and generous. The risk is that nobody wants to slow down or do the paperwork.

Gemini and Aquarius· Sextile

Gemini matches Aries' pace and banter, and Aquarius gives it a cause bigger than winning. Air feeds fire here: an easy friendship that becomes a strong partnership when both sides keep it interesting.

Aries with Aries· Same sign

Two Aries make a fast, honest and competitive match. Arguments flare and clear in minutes. It works when the competition points outward at a shared goal rather than at each other.

Libra· Opposite

Libra holds what Aries lacks: patience with other views and a feel for timing. Aries teaches Libra to decide; Libra teaches Aries that how something is done matters as much as doing it.

Cancer and Capricorn· Square

Cancer and Capricorn are the other cardinal signs, so all three want to set direction. Cancer leads through care, Capricorn through structure. The friction is about who goes first, and handled well it produces unusually capable teams.

Virgo and Scorpio· Quincunx

Virgo wants it right when Aries wants it done. Scorpio shares Aries' Mars rulership but turns it inward and plays a long game. Both pairings need steady adjustment, and both teach Aries the skills it tends to skip.

Taurus and Pisces· Semi-sextile

Pisces sits just behind Aries and Taurus just ahead. Pisces softens Aries' edges with imagination; Taurus supplies the follow-through. Neighbors feel unfamiliar at first and complementary later.

Common Questions About Aries

What are the Aries dates?

Aries runs from the March equinox, on March 20 or 21, to about April 19 or 20, when the Sun enters Taurus. The exact start moment changes each year; the table on this page lists it for every year from 1930 to 2040.

What planet rules Aries?

Mars rules Aries in both traditional and modern astrology. The Sun is exalted in Aries at 19°, Venus is in detriment, and Saturn is in its fall.

Is Aries a fire sign?

Yes. Aries is cardinal fire, the first of the three fire signs alongside Leo and Sagittarius. Cardinal signs start each season, which is why Aries is associated with initiative.

Why is Aries the first sign?

The tropical zodiac is measured from the March equinox, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. That point is defined as 0° Aries, so Aries is first by definition, and it coincides with the start of spring in the northern hemisphere.

Is Saturn in Aries now?

Saturn is in Aries now. This visit runs from May 25, 2025 to April 13, 2028, apart from a return to Pisces between September 1, 2025 and February 14, 2026. Before this, Saturn was last in Aries from 1996 to 1999. After it leaves, it returns in 2055.
