Libra: Balance Is a Verb
The only sign whose symbol is an object rather than a creature. Libra opens autumn at the equinox, when day and night stand equal, and spends its life trying to keep them that way.
The Only Sign That Isn't a Creature
Every other symbol in the zodiac is a person or an animal. Libra is a pair of scales. Early Greek astronomers knew these stars as the Claws of the Scorpion; the Romans recast them as the Balance, and the image fits the season. Libra begins at the September equinox, when day and night are briefly equal everywhere on Earth.
Libra wants everyone to get along, and it will rearrange an entire social situation to make that happen. It has a genuine talent for seeing both sides of an argument, which is a gift in mediation and a curse at a restaurant menu. The charm is real: Libra can talk its way into, and out of, almost anything.

Libra Season, Spent Entirely in Virgo
For the whole of tropical Libra season the Sun stands in front of the constellation Virgo. It reaches the faint stars of Libra only around November 1 and crosses them in about three weeks.
Two of the brightest stars in the sky, Spica in Virgo and Arcturus in Boötes, now both sit near 24° of tropical Libra. Sidereal astrology starts Libra in mid-October, while the Sun is still among Virgo's stars.
This tropical Libra season runs Sep 23, 2026 to Oct 23, 2026. Over those days the Sun stands in front of Virgo (Sep 23–Oct 23). Sidereal Libra begins Oct 17.
Venus in Public
Venus rules Libra, but she shows up differently than in Taurus. Where Taurus is sensual and grounded, Libra is aesthetic and social. These are the people with the beautiful apartment, the well-curated wardrobe, and the uncanny ability to introduce the two people at a party who absolutely needed to meet each other.
Libra is the sign of the other: partnership, contracts, diplomacy and the open enemy you negotiate with rather than fight. Its instinct is to understand a situation through relationship, asking how something affects everyone involved before asking how it affects itself.
The Sun is in its fall in Libra, which tradition reads as the self taking second place to the partnership. That is Libra's great virtue in teams and marriages, and its risk: it can lose track of what it actually wants.
Moon, Saturn, Jupiter: Decans and Terms of Libra
Saturn holds Libra's opening term and reaches its exaltation at 21°, at the boundary between the terms of Jupiter and Venus. Mars, in detriment here, gets only the last two degrees.
The Chaldean faces are the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter. The modern scheme uses the air rulers, Venus, Uranus and Mercury, and only the middle decan, through Saturn's traditional rulership of Aquarius, overlaps.
0°–10° Libra
☽︎ Moon face · Venus (modern) · from Sep 23
The Moon rules the first decan by face, and Saturn holds the opening term. Early Libra is sensitive to atmosphere and careful with commitments; it reads the room before it says a word. Modern astrologers give these degrees to Venus.
10°–20° Libra
♄︎ Saturn face · Uranus / Saturn (modern) · from Oct 3
Saturn rules the middle decan and is exalted at its far edge. This is Libra's legal mind: principled, interested in rules that are fair to everyone, and willing to be the one who writes them. The modern scheme gives the decan to Aquarius' rulers.
20°–30° Libra
♃︎ Jupiter face · Mercury (modern) · from Oct 13
Jupiter rules the last decan by face and Venus holds its main term. Spica and Arcturus sit near 24° here, and late Libra is associated with talent, grace and good fortune through others. Modern rulership gives it to Mercury.
Libra's Partners, From Easy to Educational
As the sign of partnership, Libra takes compatibility more seriously than most. It finds natural company in the air signs and in the fire signs a sextile away, and its hardest lessons in the other cardinal signs, which want decisions faster than Libra likes to make them.
Gemini and Aquarius· Trine (same element)
Gemini keeps the conversation sparkling and Aquarius widens it to friends, causes and communities. Easy, sociable air pairings that sometimes talk around a problem instead of through it.
Leo and Sagittarius· Sextile
Leo brings romance and an appreciation for Libra's style; Sagittarius brings adventure and an honesty Libra secretly enjoys. Fire gives Libra's air warmth and a direction to move in.
Libra with Libra· Same sign
Two Libras create a beautiful, considerate partnership in which nobody raises their voice. Decisions take a long time. It works best when one of them is willing, at least sometimes, to simply pick the restaurant.
Aries· Opposite
Aries is direct, fast and unconcerned with how it looks. Libra is drawn to that decisiveness; Aries is drawn to Libra's poise. This is the relationship axis of the zodiac and a classic attraction of opposites.
Cancer and Capricorn· Square
Cancer wants loyalty to its own people before fairness to everyone; Capricorn wants results before harmony. Both press Libra to commit, which is uncomfortable and often good for it.
Sun signs are a first read. For two real people, compare whole charts with the synastry calculator.
Indecision as a Commitment to Fairness
As a cardinal air sign, Libra actually initiates. It starts conversations, launches collaborations and proposes ideas. The follow-through can wobble because it is already second-guessing whether the other option was better.
The indecisiveness is not superficial. It is a genuine commitment to fairness taken to its logical extreme: if there are two valid perspectives, choosing one feels like betraying the other. Mars, the planet of open conflict, is in detriment here, so Libra will often delay a decision rather than disappoint someone. The Libras who learn to make a call and live with imperfection become some of the most effective leaders in the zodiac.

Saturn Returns to Its Exaltation in 2039: Slow Planets in Libra
Libra's last long stretch of outer-planet weather came between 1942 and 1984. Neptune passed through from 1942 to 1957, Uranus from 1968 to 1975, and Pluto from 1971 to 1984, the generation often linked with a reworking of relationships and marriage.
Saturn was last in Libra from 2009 to 2012 and returns, exalted, from September 2039 to July 2042. Jupiter visits again from August 2028 to September 2029, and Uranus from 2051 to 2059.
| Planet | Previous visit | In Libra now | Next visit |

| ♆︎ Neptune | Oct 1942 – Aug 1957 | No | — |
| ♇︎ Pluto | Oct 1971 – Aug 1984 | No | — |
Visits run from first entry to final exit, including retrograde dips back into the previous sign.
Why Saturn Is Exalted in Libra
Saturn, the planet of law, structure and consequences, reaches its exaltation at 21° Libra. The pairing makes sense once you see Libra's fairness as more than politeness. Justice needs rules that apply equally to everyone, and agreements need to be kept even when keeping them is inconvenient.
Mature Libra has this Saturnian backbone. It is the judge, the negotiator and the partner who honors the contract. It knows that real harmony is built on clear terms and that keeping the peace by avoiding every hard conversation is a debt that comes due later.
The September Equinox and the Start of Libra
Libra begins at the September equinox, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south and reaches 180° of ecliptic longitude. It is the exact mirror of the March equinox that begins Aries.
In UTC the equinox falls on September 22 or 23. Over recent decades September 22 has become slightly more common. Birthdays on September 22, 23 and 24 are the ones worth checking against the table.
Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was September 22, 2040 at 09:45 UTC and the latest was September 24, 1931 at 00:23 UTC.

Libra Questions and Answers
What are the Libra dates?
Libra runs from the September equinox, on September 22 or 23, to about October 22 or 23. The table on this page gives the exact start for every year from 1930 to 2040.
What planet rules Libra?
Venus rules Libra. Saturn is exalted in Libra at 21°, the Sun is in its fall, and Mars is in detriment because Libra is opposite Mars' sign, Aries.
Why is Libra the only zodiac sign that is an object?
Libra's stars were once counted as the claws of the neighboring Scorpion. Roman astronomers made them a separate constellation, the Balance, which suited the equinox, when day and night are equal.
When is Saturn next in Libra?
Saturn is not in Libra right now. Its most recent visit ran from October 29, 2009 to October 5, 2012, apart from a return to Virgo between April 7, 2010 and July 21, 2010. The next visit runs from September 5, 2039 to July 14, 2042, apart from an early step into Scorpio between November 11, 2041 and June 21, 2042.
