Capricorn and the Long Climb
Saturn's night house begins at the December solstice, the darkest point of the northern year. Capricorn plays the long game, and it usually wins it.

The Five-Year Plan, and the Backup Plan
Capricorn has a five-year plan, a backup five-year plan, and probably a spreadsheet comparing them. They take their time, but do not mistake that for a lack of ambition. Capricorn is climbing, always climbing. It just refuses to rush and risk the fall.
They are not flashy about it. There is no vision-boarding or manifesting here, just work, strategy and an almost eerie willingness to delay gratification. Capricorn would rather be underestimated for years and right at the end than celebrated early and wrong.
The December Solstice: Exact Start of Capricorn, 1930–2040
Capricorn begins at the December solstice, when the Sun reaches 270° of ecliptic longitude and its greatest southern declination. In UTC that falls on December 21 in most recent years and on December 22 in the rest.
Births on December 21, 22 or 23 can fall either side of the solstice. The table gives the exact moment for every year from 1930 to 2040.
Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was December 21, 2040 at 06:33 UTC and the latest was December 22, 1931 at 19:30 UTC.

Saturn and the Logic of Not Yet
Saturn rules Capricorn, and Saturn is the planet of not yet: the force that says you have to earn it before you get it. This makes Capricorn simultaneously the most patient and the most driven sign in the zodiac. It respects time, effort, experience and rank, and it distrusts anything that arrives too easily.
The Moon, which stands for comfort and emotional need, is in detriment here. Capricorns often learn early to be self-sufficient, and many seem older than their age in their twenties. An interesting thing happens as they get older: they tend to lighten up, almost in reverse, as if Saturn's pressure releases once they have proven what they needed to prove.
Pluto in Capricorn, 2008–2024, and the 2020 Conjunctions
Pluto entered Capricorn in January 2008 and left for good on November 19, 2024, after dipping into Aquarius twice in 2023 and 2024. Its stay opened with the global financial crisis, and astrologers read the whole period through the lens of institutions, debt and power structures being tested.
Saturn joined it from December 2017 to December 2020, and the two met at 22°46′ Capricorn on January 12, 2020. Jupiter, in its fall here, met Pluto three times that same year. In the previous generation, Uranus and Neptune were both in Capricorn and joined in 1993. Saturn returns from 2047 to 2050.

Mars Exalted in Its Own Term: Capricorn's Degrees
Capricorn is the only sign where a planet's exaltation falls inside that planet's own term: Mars is exalted at 28°, and Mars holds the closing term from 26° to 30°. Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn hold the terms before it.
The Chaldean faces are Jupiter, Mars and the Sun. The modern scheme gives the decans to the earth rulers, Saturn, Venus and Mercury, and the two systems share none of them.
0°–10° Capricorn
♃︎ Jupiter face · Saturn (modern) · from Dec 21
Jupiter, in its fall in Capricorn, rules the first decan by face, and the opening terms belong to Mercury and Jupiter. Early Capricorn mixes caution with ambition and a dry, observant humor. Modern astrologers give these degrees to Saturn.
10°–20° Capricorn
♂︎ Mars face · Venus (modern) · from Dec 31
Mars rules the middle decan by face and Venus holds most of its terms. Drive meets taste: these Capricorns often pursue status through craft, design or reputation, and work very hard at making it look effortless. The modern scheme gives the decan to Venus.
20°–30° Capricorn
☉︎ Sun face · Mercury (modern) · from Jan 10
The Sun rules the final decan by face, Saturn and Mars hold its terms, and Mars is exalted at 28°. This is Capricorn at its most purposeful and enduring. Saturn and Pluto met at 22° in January 2020. Modern astrologers give the decan to Mercury.
Why the Goat Has a Fish's Tail
The Sea-Goat is one of the oldest images in the zodiac. Babylonian astronomers drew these stars as a goat-fish linked to Ea, the god of fresh water and wisdom; Greek myth later explained it as Pan, half-transformed while leaping into a river to escape a monster.
The image suits the sign. Most people only see the goat, sure-footed on the mountain, climbing steadily toward the summit. The fish tail is the part Capricorn keeps out of sight: an emotional interior far richer and more complicated than it lets on. Sharing it can feel like a strategic vulnerability, so Capricorn does it rarely, and only with people it trusts completely.
Capricorn Season Under the Archer's Stars
For the whole of tropical Capricorn season, from the solstice to about January 19, the Sun stands among the stars of Sagittarius. It crosses the constellation Capricornus from about January 20 to mid-February, roughly matching the sidereal sign, which begins in mid-January.
Capricornus is one of the faintest constellations of the zodiac. Its best-known star, Deneb Algedi, the Goat's tail, now sits near 23° of tropical Aquarius.
The next tropical Capricorn season runs Dec 21, 2026 to Jan 20, 2027. Over those days the Sun stands in front of Sagittarius (Dec 21–Jan 19). Sidereal Capricorn begins Jan 14.
Capricorn's Alliances
Capricorn builds most easily with the other earth signs and with the water signs a sextile away, which soften it. Its squares are the other cardinal signs, each of which also expects to be in charge.
Taurus and Virgo· Trine (same element)
Taurus shares Capricorn's patience and Virgo its standards. These earth pairings build things that last: savings, homes, businesses. The work ethic is mutual; the challenge is making time for pleasure.
Scorpio and Pisces· Sextile
Scorpio matches Capricorn's seriousness and strategic mind; Pisces softens it and reaches the feeling it keeps hidden. Water gives Capricorn's earth life, and both pairings tend to deepen over time.
Capricorn with Capricorn· Same sign
Two Capricorns make a formidable team and a respectful, steady partnership. They understand each other's ambitions. The risk is a relationship run like a well-managed company, with affection scheduled for later.
Cancer· Opposite
Cancer is the other end of the home-and-career axis: it nurtures people while Capricorn builds the structures that protect them. The Moon rules Cancer and is in detriment in Capricorn, which is exactly why each holds what the other needs.
Aries and Libra· Square
Aries wants to move now and Libra wants everyone to agree first; Capricorn wants a plan. All three are cardinal signs that expect to lead, and the friction is about authority and timing.
Gemini and Leo· Quincunx
Gemini's improvisation and Leo's showmanship both look frivolous to Capricorn at first. Both pairings ask it to lighten up, which it does, slowly and to its own benefit.
Sagittarius and Aquarius· Semi-sextile
Sagittarius, just behind, brings the optimism Capricorn rations; Aquarius, just ahead, shares its traditional ruler, Saturn, and an interest in a future Capricorn can help build.

Cardinal Earth at the Turn of the Year
Capricorn begins at the December solstice, when the Sun reaches its southernmost point and the days, in the north, start to lengthen again. As a cardinal sign it initiates, and it initiates through structure: companies, institutions, plans and rules that outlast the people who made them.
Mars is exalted here, at 28°. In Capricorn, the planet of drive becomes disciplined, strategic and effective rather than impulsive. Jupiter, by contrast, is in its fall: Capricorn is wary of easy optimism and generous promises. The sign's humor is dry and often very funny, which surprises people who mistook its reserve for a lack of warmth.
