Virgo, the Craft of Getting It Right
Mercury rules Virgo and is exalted in it, a double honor no other planet holds anywhere. The result is the zodiac's editor, healer and quality inspector.
The Person Who Read the Manual
Virgo is the person who read the manual, found three errors in it, and quietly fixed them before anyone noticed. They have high standards for themselves, for their work and, which is where it gets tricky, for you. When a Virgo gives you advice, it is because they genuinely cannot help it.
This is the sign that color-codes things, maintains the spreadsheet, and sees the typo on page 47 that four editors missed. Their care shows up as practical help: the friend who drives you to the airport at 4am, not the one who sends a heartfelt text about it afterward.

Mercury, Twice Over
Mercury rules Gemini too, but the expression is completely different. Where Gemini takes in information broadly, Virgo organizes it ruthlessly. Gemini asks what else is out there; Virgo asks which of it is true, useful and correctly labeled.
Virgo is also Mercury's exaltation, peaking at 15°, which makes it the only sign in the traditional scheme where one planet holds both rulership and exaltation. Astrologers read that as Mercury at full strength in its analytical, discriminating mode: the ability to separate signal from noise, diagnose a problem and design the fix.
That same faculty, turned on the body, explains Virgo's long association with health, diet and daily routine. The sign rules the intestines in medical astrology, the organs that sort nourishment from waste, and many Virgos notice their nerves in their digestion first.
Mercury Exalted at 15°: Virgo's Terms and Decans
Mercury opens Virgo with its own term and reaches its exaltation at 15°, which falls inside the term of Venus, the planet in its fall here. The closing terms belong to Mars and Saturn.
The Chaldean faces run the Sun, Venus and Mercury. The modern scheme gives the decans to the earth rulers, Mercury, Saturn and Venus, so Mercury and Venus appear in both systems, in different places.
0°–10° Virgo
☉︎ Sun face · Mercury (modern) · from Aug 23
The Sun rules the first decan by face, and Regulus now sits at its threshold. Early Virgo carries some of Leo's warmth into the sign: confident about its skills and glad to be useful in visible ways. Mercury's opening term keeps the mind sharp.
10°–20° Virgo
♀︎ Venus face · Saturn (modern) · from Sep 2
Venus rules the middle decan despite her fall here, and Mercury reaches its exaltation at 15° inside her term. The result is refinement: taste applied to detail and care expressed as craft. The modern scheme gives the decan to Saturn, and the discipline shows.
20°–30° Virgo
☿︎ Mercury face · Venus (modern) · from Sep 12
Mercury rules the last decan by face, its third role in the sign after ruler and exaltation. Mars holds most of these degrees by term, lending energy for exacting work. Modern astrologers give the decan to Venus, which softens the edges.
The Sun Spends 45 Days in the Constellation Virgo
During tropical Virgo season the Sun is still among the stars of Leo, and Regulus, the Lion's heart, now marks 0° of tropical Virgo. The Sun reaches the constellation Virgo only in mid-September, around the start of sidereal Virgo.
Once there, it stays a long time. Virgo is the largest constellation on the ecliptic, and the Sun takes about 45 days to cross it, until the end of October. Spica, its brightest star, lies near 24° of tropical Libra.
The next tropical Virgo season runs Aug 23, 2027 to Sep 23, 2027. Over those days the Sun stands in front of Leo (Aug 23–Sep 16) and Virgo (Sep 17–Sep 23). Sidereal Virgo begins Sep 17.
The Harvest Sign
The constellation Virgo is usually drawn as a young woman holding an ear of wheat, marked by the bright star Spica, whose name means the ear of grain. The Sun used to pass through her stars during the late-summer harvest, and the sign kept the association: gathering what has grown, sorting it, storing the good and discarding the rest.
As a mutable earth sign at the end of summer, Virgo is quietly adaptive. It adjusts routines, tweaks systems and improves processes in ways nobody notices until Virgo goes on vacation and everything falls apart.
Virgo's Slow-Planet Record, From the 1960s to the 2040s
The defining Virgo transit of the last century came in the 1960s. Pluto was in Virgo from 1956 to 1972 and Uranus from 1961 to 1969, and they met in exact conjunction in 1965 and 1966 near 16° to 17° of the sign. Astrologers tie that generation to new technology, health movements and a restless questioning of systems.
Neptune was in Virgo from 1928 to 1943, and Saturn most recently from 2007 to 2010. Coming up: Jupiter from July 2027 to August 2028, Saturn from 2036 to 2039, and Uranus from 2045 to 2052.
| Planet | Previous visit | In Virgo now | Next visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ♃︎ Jupiter | Aug 2015 – Sep 2016 | No | Jul 2027 – Aug 2028 |
| ♄︎ Saturn | Sep 2007 – Jul 2010 | No | Oct 2036 – Sep 2039 |
| ♅︎ Uranus | Nov 1961 – Jun 1969 | No | Oct 2045 – Sep 2052 |
| ♆︎ Neptune | Sep 1928 – Aug 1943 | No | Sep 2092 – after 2100 |
| ♇︎ Pluto | Oct 1956 – Jul 1972 | No | — |
Visits run from first entry to final exit, including retrograde dips back into the previous sign.
The Critic Is Usually Aimed Inward
The criticism about Virgos being critical is fair, but it comes from a good place: they see how things could be better, and it physically bothers them not to say something. What outsiders miss is that the harshest reviews are reserved for themselves. Perfectionism, worry and a sense of never quite having done enough are common.
Venus is in her fall in Virgo, which tradition reads as difficulty with ease, pleasure and receiving love without earning it. Virgo shows love by being useful and can be uncomfortable being looked after in return. The growth edge is learning that being loved does not depend on being helpful.
Virgo's Best Fits and Hard Lessons
Virgo works most naturally with the other earth signs and with the water signs a sextile away. Its squares are the other mutable signs, which change course as often as it does but for very different reasons.
Taurus and Capricorn· Trine (same element)
Taurus and Capricorn share Virgo's belief in doing things properly. Taurus slows its worrying down; Capricorn gives its competence a ladder to climb. Reliable, productive pairings that sometimes forget to have fun.
Cancer and Scorpio· Sextile
Cancer appreciates being looked after in practical ways, and Scorpio respects Virgo's perceptiveness and discretion. Both bring out a warmth Virgo does not always show in public.
Virgo with Virgo· Same sign
Two Virgos run an excellent household and a meticulous business, and understand each other's anxieties. The risk is a loop of criticism; it works best when both agree to be kinder to each other than to themselves.
Pisces· Opposite
Pisces dissolves the boundaries Virgo draws. Virgo serves through precision, Pisces through compassion. Each has what the other lacks, and the axis is deeply complementary as long as neither tries to fix the other.
Gemini and Sagittarius· Square
Gemini shares Virgo's ruler but scatters where Virgo focuses; Sagittarius paints in broad strokes where Virgo checks details. All three are mutable, and the friction is about method rather than goals.

When Virgo Begins: Year-by-Year Start Times
Virgo begins when the Sun reaches 150° of ecliptic longitude. Over recent decades that moment has fallen on August 22 or 23 in UTC, split almost evenly, so late-August birthdays are among the most often disputed.
If you were born on August 22, 23 or 24, look up your year. A birth an hour before the listed time is still Leo.
Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was August 22, 2040 at 11:53 UTC and the latest was August 24, 1931 at 03:10 UTC.

Virgo in Brief
What are the Virgo dates?
Virgo runs from about August 22 or 23 to September 22 or 23, ending at the September equinox. Exact start times for every year from 1930 to 2040 are in the table on this page.
What planet rules Virgo?
Mercury rules Virgo and is also exalted there, at 15°. Venus is in her fall in Virgo and Jupiter is in detriment. Some modern astrologers suggest Chiron or Ceres as an additional ruler, but that is not standard.
Why is Virgo shown holding wheat?
The constellation Virgo is traditionally a maiden carrying an ear of grain, marked by the star Spica, from the Latin for ear of wheat. The image ties the sign to the late-summer harvest and to goddesses of agriculture such as Demeter.
What was the Uranus–Pluto conjunction in Virgo?
Uranus and Pluto were conjunct in Virgo in 1965 and 1966, near 16° to 17° of the sign. It is one of the best-known generational signatures in astrology, shared by people born in the mid-1960s.
