Aquarius, Water Bearer of the Air

Two Years Ahead, and Already Bored

Aquarius is the friend who was into the thing two years before everyone else and is already bored of it by the time you discover it. They care about humanity in the abstract, sometimes more than about the specific humans standing in front of them. Intellectually brilliant. Emotionally? Working on it.

They are the sign most likely to build something nobody asked for and have it turn out to be exactly what was needed. Aquarius notices where a system is failing people and starts sketching a better one, often before anyone else has admitted there is a problem.

A Water Bearer That Is an Air Sign

The figure in the sky is usually read as Ganymede, cup-bearer to the gods, pouring from an urn. Astrologers read the pouring as knowledge, ideas and attention shared outward: the friend who sends you the article, the organizer who gets the group together, the engineer who open-sources the tool.

Air signs live in the mind and in relationships between people, and Aquarius is air at its most collective. Where Gemini talks to individuals and Libra to partners, Aquarius talks to groups, networks and the future. Friendship, community and shared causes are its natural ground.

Pluto in Aquarius Until 2044, and the 2020 Great Conjunction

Pluto first touched Aquarius on March 23, 2023, slipped back twice, and settled in on November 19, 2024. It stays until March 2043, makes a last return from September 2043, and leaves on January 19, 2044. Its previous stay, from 1777 to 1798, coincided with the American and French revolutions and the discovery of Uranus.

Jupiter and Saturn met at 0°29′ Aquarius on December 21, 2020, a great conjunction many astrologers read as the start of a two-century run of these meetings in air signs. Saturn stayed until March 2023. Uranus was here from 1995 to 2003 and Neptune from 1998 to 2012.

Visits run from first entry to final exit, including retrograde dips back into the previous sign.

Saturn and Uranus: System-Builder and Rebel

Uranus rules here in modern astrology, with revolution, disruption and originality, and Saturn, the traditional ruler, adds structure and discipline. That tension between rebellion and system-building is the heart of the sign. Aquarius wants to change the rules, and then it wants the new rules followed precisely.

As a fixed air sign, it commits to its ideas hard, sometimes too hard. An Aquarius who has decided it is right is roughly as movable as concrete, which surprises people who assumed that an open mind meant a flexible one.

Venus, Mercury, Moon: The Three Faces of Aquarius

No classical planet is exalted in Aquarius, and the Sun is in detriment. The terms run Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn, ending with the sign's traditional ruler.

The Chaldean faces are Venus, Mercury and the Moon. The modern scheme assigns Uranus, Mercury and Venus, so the two systems agree only on the middle decan.

Aquarius Among the Signs

Aquarius is most at ease with the other air signs and with the fire signs a sextile away. Its squares are the other fixed signs, which match its stubbornness, and its opposite, Leo, holds the warmth it most often holds back.

Aquarius Season in the Stars of Capricornus

Almost the whole of tropical Aquarius season passes with the Sun in front of the constellation Capricornus. It reaches the stars of the Water Bearer around February 17 and stays until mid-March.

Aquarius is the only sign that still holds its constellation's brightest star. Sadalsuud lies near 23° of tropical Aquarius, while the leading stars of the other eleven constellations have all drifted into the next sign. Sidereal Aquarius begins in mid-February.

The next tropical Aquarius season runs Jan 20, 2027 to Feb 18, 2027. Over those days the Sun stands in front of Capricornus (Jan 20–Feb 16) and Aquarius (Feb 17–Feb 18). Sidereal Aquarius begins Feb 13.

Caring at a Distance

The emotional detachment is real. Aquarius processes feelings intellectually, which means a partner can be having a heart-to-heart while Aquarius is having a think-through. It does care, genuinely, about causes and people and the future, but the caring comes packaged in a way that can feel distant up close.

The Sun, which stands for the individual self, is in detriment in Aquarius. Tradition reads that as the ego being subordinated to the group, and it explains both the sign's humanitarian streak and its occasional discomfort with being singled out or adored. Aquarius tends to love best through loyalty, honesty and respect for the other person's freedom.

When the Sun Enters Aquarius, 1930–2040

Aquarius begins when the Sun reaches 300° of ecliptic longitude, about a month after the December solstice. In UTC that has been January 20 in most recent years and January 19 in some.

Mid-January birthdays from the 19th to the 21st are the ones that need the table. Compare your birth time with the entry for your year.

Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was January 19, 2037 at 17:54 UTC and the latest was January 21, 1932 at 06:07 UTC.
