What Leo Is Really Like
Fixed fire at the height of summer, ruled by the Sun alone. Leo is generous, loyal and visible, and it needs to be appreciated more than it likes to say.

Presence, Not Performance
Leo walks into a room and the room rearranges itself. That is not arrogance, or not only arrogance; mostly it is a natural gravitational pull. There is a warmth and presence to Leo that other signs spend years trying to manufacture.
Leos are the generous friend: the one who picks up the tab, organizes the birthday, and remembers what you were nervous about last month. The generosity is real. Leo gives time, money, energy and attention freely, and it expects, quietly but firmly, that the giving will be noticed.
The Only Sign the Sun Rules
Every other planet rules two signs. The Sun rules one, and Leo carries that singularity. In astrology the Sun stands for the self, vitality and purpose: the part of a person that wants to shine and be recognized for being exactly who they are. Leo is that principle with nothing diluting it.
Traditional medical astrology gives Leo the heart and the spine, and the metaphors hold. Leo leads from the heart, stands up straight, and is wounded most by anything that feels like a betrayal of loyalty. Creative work, play, romance and children, the things people make out of sheer joy, are all classic Leo territory.
Jupiter in Leo, 2026–2027, and the Pluto-in-Leo Generation
Jupiter entered Leo on June 30, 2026 and stays until July 26, 2027, its first visit since 2014 to 2015. The planet of growth in the sign of self-expression is traditionally read as a confident, creative, generous year.
The most-discussed Leo transit of the past century is Pluto's, from 1937 to 1958, which covers much of the post-war baby boom. Before Pluto came Neptune, from 1914 to 1929, and Uranus followed from 1955 to 1962. Saturn, in detriment here, returns from 2034 to 2037 and Uranus from 2039 to 2046.
| Planet | Previous visit | In Leo now | Next visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ♃︎ Jupiter | Jul 2014 – Aug 2015 | Jun 2026 – Jul 2027 | Jun 2038 – Jul 2039 |
| ♄︎ Saturn | Jul 2005 – Sep 2007 | No | Aug 2034 – Jul 2037 |

| ♇︎ Pluto | Oct 1937 – Jun 1958 | No | — |
Visits run from first entry to final exit, including retrograde dips back into the previous sign.
Saturn, Jupiter, Mars: The Three Faces of Leo
No classical planet is exalted in Leo; the Sun's rulership is enough. The sign's terms run Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mercury and Mars, and its Chaldean faces go to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars.
The modern triplicity scheme gives the decans to the fire rulers, the Sun, Jupiter and Mars. Leo and Aries are the only signs where the two systems agree on two of the three decans.
0°–10° Leo
♄︎ Saturn face · Sun (modern) · from Jul 23
Saturn, uncomfortable in Leo, rules the first decan by face while Jupiter and Venus hold its terms. Early Leo combines warmth with seriousness: dignified, conscientious and steadier than the stereotype. Modern astrologers simply give these degrees to the Sun.
10°–20° Leo
♃︎ Jupiter face · Jupiter (modern) · from Aug 2
Jupiter rules the middle decan in both the Chaldean and modern schemes. Expansiveness, generosity and an instinct for ceremony stand out. Saturn's term from 11° to 18° supplies the stamina to see large plans through to the end.
20°–30° Leo
♂︎ Mars face · Mars (modern) · from Aug 12
Mars rules the last decan by face and holds the closing term, and the modern scheme agrees. This is the boldest, most competitive stretch of Leo, with courage to spare and a temper to match. Regulus stood here for centuries before crossing into Virgo.
Fixed Fire: Keeping the Flame Lit
Aries starts the fire; Leo keeps it burning. As a fixed sign in midsummer, Leo is about sustaining what has already been lit. They are the one still showing up for the project six months in, still believing in it, still rallying others when enthusiasm fades.
That constancy extends to people. Leo is fiercely loyal and expects loyalty back. It will defend a friend in public, sometimes louder than the situation needs, and it will not forget being let down. Leaders with a Leo Sun tend to inspire devotion because they visibly care about the people on their side.
Leo in Company
Leo is at its warmest with the other fire signs and with the air signs that fan it. Its squares are the other fixed signs, which match its stubbornness, and its opposite, Aquarius, holds the values it most often overlooks.
Aries and Sagittarius· Trine (same element)
Aries brings dash and Sagittarius brings adventure, and both admire Leo openly, which it appreciates more than it admits. Big, warm, loud pairings that need someone to remember the bills.
Gemini and Libra· Sextile
Gemini keeps Leo entertained and Libra makes it look good. Air fans the flame: sociable, flirtatious, creative matches, with Libra especially attuned to Leo's love of style.
Leo with Leo· Same sign
Two Leos make a glamorous, generous couple and a pair of competing stars. It works when each is the other's biggest fan and breaks down when both need the spotlight on the same night.
Aquarius· Opposite
Aquarius sits across the wheel: Leo is about the individual heart, Aquarius about the group. Leo wants to be adored and Aquarius wants to be free. The tension is magnetic, and each learns what the other values.
Taurus and Scorpio· Square
Taurus withholds praise until it is earned and Scorpio meets Leo's openness with privacy. Both are fixed signs that do not give way. Respect has to come before warmth, and when it does these bonds last.

Regulus Has Left the Sign: Leo's Stars and Leo's Season
Regulus, the bright star at the Lion's heart and one of the four Royal Stars of Persian astronomy, crossed from tropical Leo into tropical Virgo in late 2011 and now sits just past 0° Virgo.
The rest of the sky tells the same story. For most of tropical Leo season the Sun is in front of the constellation Cancer; it reaches the stars of Leo around August 11 and stays among them until mid-September, close to when sidereal Leo ends.
The next tropical Leo season runs Jul 23, 2027 to Aug 23, 2027. Over those days the Sun stands in front of Cancer (Jul 23–Aug 10) and Leo (Aug 11–Aug 23). Sidereal Leo begins Aug 17.
Pride, Praise and the Saturn Problem
Saturn, the planet of criticism, limits and delayed reward, is in detriment in Leo. That is the sign's tender spot. Leo can handle hard work and pressure, but feeling overlooked or unappreciated drains it fast, and the warmth can curdle into something theatrical and sulky.
The best Leos learn that leadership and spotlight are not the same thing, that you can be the Sun without needing everyone to constantly acknowledge you are glowing. Paradoxically, that is when the recognition tends to arrive.
When the Sun Enters Its Own Sign: Leo Start Times by Year
Leo begins when the Sun reaches 120° of ecliptic longitude, about a month after the June solstice. Over the last few decades that has usually been July 22 in UTC, and July 23 in a minority of years.
Because the Sun is the ruler of Leo, astrologers treat its yearly return to the sign as the Sun coming home. If you were born on July 22, 23 or 24, the table below settles which side of the line you fall.
Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was July 22, 2040 at 04:41 UTC and the latest was July 23, 1931 at 20:21 UTC.

Leo FAQs
What are the Leo dates?
Leo runs from about July 22 or 23 to August 22 or 23. The exact moment the Sun enters Leo for every year from 1930 to 2040 is in the table on this page.
Is Leo ruled by the Sun?
Yes. The Sun rules Leo in both traditional and modern astrology, and Leo is the only sign it rules. Saturn is in detriment in Leo, and no classical planet is exalted or in fall there.
Is Regulus still in Leo?
Not in the tropical zodiac. Precession carried Regulus across 0° Virgo in late 2011, so astrologers now place it in early Virgo, although it remains in the constellation Leo.
When is Jupiter in Leo?
Jupiter is in Leo now. This visit runs from June 30, 2026 to July 26, 2027. Before this, Jupiter was last in Leo from 2014 to 2015. After it leaves, it returns in 2038.
