Scorpio Below the Surface
Mars rules it by tradition and Pluto by modern convention, and the Moon is in its fall here. Scorpio is the zodiac's investigator, and the most misread sign of the twelve.

Reading the Subtext
Scorpio knows your secret. Maybe you have not told them; it does not matter, they have figured it out. This is the sign that operates on a level most people cannot access: reading subtext, tracking power dynamics, remembering exactly who did what and when. If a Scorpio is loyal to you, you have an ally for life.
Scorpio gets a reputation for being manipulative, and an undeveloped Scorpio can weaponize information. A mature one is simply perceptive in a way that is hard to hide from. They know when you are lying. They know why you are lying. And they are quietly deciding whether they care enough to call you on it.
Mars or Pluto? Scorpio's Two Rulers
For two thousand years Scorpio was the night house of Mars. Where Aries, Mars' day house, fights in the open, Scorpio fights by strategy: patience, concealment, the decisive move at the right moment. Surgeons, investigators and crisis managers fit the old picture well.
Pluto was discovered in 1930 and modern astrologers assigned it to Scorpio, adding themes of death and rebirth, power, inheritance and the unconscious. Most astrologers now read both. Mars describes how Scorpio acts; Pluto describes what it is drawn toward: the hidden, the taboo, and anything that has to be taken apart to be understood.
Six Days in Scorpius, Nineteen in Ophiuchus
During tropical Scorpio season the Sun never reaches the stars of the Scorpion. It moves from the constellation Virgo into Libra and only crosses into Scorpius around November 24, after tropical Scorpio has ended. It leaves about six days later.
For the next nineteen days or so the Sun crosses Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, whose figure reaches down onto the ecliptic. That is the source of the recurring claim about a thirteenth sign. Antares, the Scorpion's red heart, now sits near 10° of tropical Sagittarius.
The next tropical Scorpio season runs Oct 23, 2026 to Nov 22, 2026. Over those days the Sun stands in front of Virgo (Oct 23–Oct 31) and Libra (Nov 1–Nov 22). Sidereal Scorpio begins Nov 16.
Pluto's Fastest Sign: Slow Planets in Scorpio
Pluto's orbit is so elongated that it spends anywhere from about twelve to more than thirty years in a sign. Scorpio got the short end: Pluto passed through from November 1983 to November 1995, reaching perihelion, its closest point to the Sun, in 1989 while in the sign.
Neptune was in Scorpio from 1955 to 1970 and Uranus from 1974 to 1981. Saturn last visited from 2012 to 2015. Ahead: Jupiter from September 2029 to October 2030, Saturn from 2041 to 2044, and Uranus from 2058 to 2065.
| Planet | Previous visit | In Scorpio now | Next visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ♃︎ Jupiter | Oct 2017 – Nov 2018 | No | Sep 2029 – Oct 2030 |
| ♄︎ Saturn | Oct 2012 – Sep 2015 | No | Nov 2041 – Oct 2044 |
| ♅︎ Uranus | Nov 1974 – Nov 1981 | No | Nov 2058 – Oct 2065 |
| ♆︎ Neptune | Dec 1955 – Nov 1970 | No | — |
| ♇︎ Pluto | Nov 1983 – Nov 1995 | No | — |
Visits run from first entry to final exit, including retrograde dips back into the previous sign.
Fixed Water: Feeling Things Permanently
As a fixed water sign, Scorpio does not just feel things; it feels them permanently. A grudge from 2003 is still there. A kindness from 2003 is also still there. The loyalty and the memory are two sides of the same intensity.
The Moon, which stands for emotional need and the wish to be cared for, is in its fall in Scorpio. That is why so much of the sign's depth stays out of sight. Scorpio feels more than almost anyone and shows less, testing people for a long time before it lets them close. Once it does, intimacy is total and betrayal is very nearly unforgivable.
The Decans of Scorpio, Mars to Venus
No classical planet is exalted in Scorpio. Mars, its traditional ruler, holds the opening term, and the closing degrees belong to Saturn.
The Chaldean faces run Mars, the Sun and Venus, the same sequence as Aries, its fellow Mars sign. The modern scheme gives the decans to the water rulers: Pluto, Neptune and the Moon.
0°–10° Scorpio
♂︎ Mars face · Pluto / Mars (modern) · from Oct 23
Mars rules the first decan by face and holds the opening term, so this is Scorpio at its most concentrated. Determination, privacy and a long memory for both loyalty and injury are strongest here. The modern scheme agrees, giving these degrees to Pluto and Mars.
10°–20° Scorpio
☉︎ Sun face · Neptune / Jupiter (modern) · from Nov 2
The Sun rules the middle decan and Mercury's term covers most of it. Scorpio's intensity turns outward into investigation: the researcher who will not stop until they know. The modern scheme gives the decan to Pisces' rulers and stresses intuition.
20°–30° Scorpio
♀︎ Venus face · Moon (modern) · from Nov 12
Venus, weak in Scorpio, rules the last decan and Saturn holds the closing term. Late Scorpio pairs deep attachment with a need for control, and astrologers often find it the most emotionally complex stretch of the sign. Modern rulers give it to the Moon.
Who Scorpio Trusts
Scorpio bonds most readily with the water signs and with the earth signs a sextile away, which respect its seriousness. Its hardest pairings are the other fixed signs, each as determined as Scorpio not to give ground.
Cancer and Pisces· Trine (same element)
Cancer offers devotion and a home; Pisces offers a compassion that disarms Scorpio's suspicion. These water pairings are among the most intense and loyal in the zodiac, and the least likely to stay on the surface.
Virgo and Capricorn· Sextile
Virgo's discretion and Capricorn's ambition both earn Scorpio's respect. Earth gives its depth a practical channel, and these tend to be quietly powerful partnerships.
Scorpio with Scorpio· Same sign
Two Scorpios understand each other completely, which is both comforting and alarming. Trust, once established, is total, and a breach is very hard to repair. Honesty has to be the rule from the first day.
Taurus· Opposite
Taurus shares Scorpio's fixity and loyalty but lives on the surface of things where Scorpio lives underneath. The pull is physical and strong, and so is the stubbornness when they disagree.
Leo and Aquarius· Square
Leo wants openness and praise; Aquarius wants detachment and freedom. Scorpio wants depth and commitment. Every fixed sign digs in, so these pairings run on respect and on knowing when not to win.
Aries and Gemini· Quincunx
Aries shares Scorpio's Mars rulership but fights in the open where Scorpio prefers strategy. Gemini's lightness can feel evasive to Scorpio. Both pairings need patience and plain speaking.
Libra and Sagittarius· Semi-sextile
Libra, just behind, brings diplomacy and charm; Sagittarius, just ahead, brings humor and an optimism Scorpio finds suspicious and secretly enjoys.

Scorpion, Eagle, Phoenix
Scorpio is the only sign astrologers routinely give three symbols. The scorpion stings when cornered; the eagle rises above the situation to see it whole; the phoenix burns down and comes back renewed. They describe the same energy at different levels of maturity.
The phoenix is the one Scorpio is built for. It handles crisis better than any other sign, often becoming the calm person in the emergency room or the one friends call when everything has fallen apart. Its growth lies in letting go: of control, of old injuries, and of the need to know everything before trusting anyone.
When Scorpio Season Begins, 1930–2040
Scorpio begins when the Sun reaches 210° of ecliptic longitude, a month after the September equinox. In UTC that has fallen on October 23 in most recent years and on October 22 in a few.
Late-October birthdays sit on one of the more contested cusps. If you were born on October 22, 23 or 24, the time for your year below decides between Libra and Scorpio.
Across 1930–2040, the earliest start was October 22, 2040 at 19:20 UTC and the latest was October 24, 1931 at 09:15 UTC.

Scorpio, Explained
What are the Scorpio dates?
Scorpio runs from about October 22 or 23 to November 21 or 22. The exact moment the Sun enters Scorpio each year from 1930 to 2040 is in the table above.
Is Scorpio ruled by Mars or Pluto?
Both, depending on the tradition. Mars was Scorpio's ruler in classical astrology. After Pluto was discovered in 1930, modern astrologers made it Scorpio's ruler, and many now use Mars and Pluto together.
Is Ophiuchus the 13th zodiac sign?
No. Ophiuchus is a constellation the Sun crosses from late November to mid-December, but zodiac signs are twelve equal 30° divisions of the ecliptic, not constellations. Neither tropical nor sidereal astrology uses Ophiuchus as a sign.
Why does Scorpio have three symbols?
Astrologers describe Scorpio as the scorpion, the eagle and the phoenix to show the same intense energy at different levels: defensive, far-seeing, and transformed. No other sign is routinely given more than one symbol.
When was Pluto in Scorpio?
Pluto was in Scorpio from November 5, 1983 to November 10, 1995, apart from a retrograde dip back into Libra in 1984 and a first step into Sagittarius from January to April 1995. It was at perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun, during that time.
