Lennon's zodiac sign was Libra; his Moon sat in Aquarius and Aries was on the horizon as rising sign, if the evening hour he gave is right; the Sun's sign holds all day, while the Moon and the rising sign both depend on that hour. The hour comes from Lennon himself. Consulting the astrologer Roger Elliot with Yoko Ono in 1969, he gave 6.30 p.m., and the historian Nicholas Campion writes that his aunt Mimi Smith, who raised him, confirmed it. So it rests on memory, his own and his family's, rather than on one copied from a birth record; English birth certificates of 1940 record no hour for a single birth, so no document can confirm it. The chart is cast for 6:30 PM on the wartime clock, UTC+1. Campion adds that Lennon named other hours on other occasions, without saying which, and two unsourced morning times also circulate.
Against simulated births of the 1940s, the Sun heads the list of what is unusual. At 16°16′ Libra the Sun has no major aspect to a single other planet; the cohort finds that in about one chart in 21. It was also setting: the computed sunset at Liverpool was 6:29:58 PM, so by the stated minute the Sun had only just dropped below the western horizon, 3°30′ along the ecliptic from the Descendant, a closeness to the horizon seen in about one chart in 31 from the decade.

A setting Sun with no planetary partners heads the ranking
Ranked by prominence and scarcity, the top three features belong to the Sun: no major aspect to a planet (about one chart in 21), an angle close by, the Descendant at under five degrees (about one chart in 9) and a sunset birth (about one chart in 31). All three depend on the hour. Venus, also without a major aspect, a condition that holds whatever the hour, comes fourth (about one chart in 15); then a rising-sign boundary within 20 minutes of the time, with Aries 17 minutes from giving way to Taurus (about 33%); the Moon–Pluto opposition squared by Mercury (about one chart in 7); a lunar eclipse 6.6 days later (about one chart in 6); and the Sun in its fall (about one chart in 12).
The Sun and Venus outside the network of major aspects
None of the chart's 15 major aspects joins the Sun to a planet. Its one major contact is the opposition to the Ascendant at 3°30′; beyond that it has only minor quincunxes to Jupiter (2°34′) and Saturn (3°03′). Older authors treated a planet without aspects as cut off from the rest of the figure, while some modern writers describe it as acting at full strength, with no other planet to temper it.
Venus, at 3°12′ Virgo, is the other outsider (about one chart in 15 in the cohort), linked only by a trine to the Midheaven and a quincunx to the Moon 0°19′ from exact, the tightest contact of any kind here. As ruler of Libra, Venus is also the Sun's host. The closest major aspects are Jupiter conjunct Saturn, still closing as both moved retrograde through Taurus, 0°28′ from exact, and Uranus trine Neptune at 0°28′; then the Moon's opposition to Pluto (0°38′) and its trine to Mars (0°53′).

The hour Lennon gave Roger Elliot, and the morning times beside it
Ray Coleman's 1984 biography, written with Mimi's cooperation, gives the same 6.30 p.m. at the Oxford Street maternity hospital, as does Bill Harry's John Lennon Encyclopedia (2000), and Mark Lewisohn's Tune In (2013) judges that “6.30PM is the most likely.” These passages were read as Google Books excerpts, without page numbers. The story of a birth during an air raid has no support: a Liverpool history newsletter citing the Liverpool Echo archive says there was no raid that night.
Britain left Greenwich time on February 25, 1940 and, because of the war, stayed an hour ahead through the winter, until double summer time began on May 4, 1941. So 6:30 PM in Liverpool was 17:30 UTC on October 9, 1940. Taken as Greenwich time by mistake, the same figure falls an hour later, inside the Taurus-rising window of 6:47 PM to 7:51 PM.
The Astrological Magazine of Bangalore printed a chart for 7:00 AM in 1994, calling its clock DST in one issue and GMT in another; some web pages give 6:30 AM, probably a slip between a.m. and p.m. Both morning charts have Libra rising and a Capricorn Moon and move all ten planets to other houses. Neither has a traceable source, so they do not displace the evening hour, which stays the best-attested time even though no record backs it.
Because 6.30 is a round figure, the margins matter. Aries, a quick riser at this latitude, held the Ascendant only from 5:59 PM to 6:47 PM, against 2 hours 54 minutes for Libra that morning, and the stated time leaves 17 minutes on the later side; boundaries that close occur in about 33% of 1940s charts. Aquarius received the Moon at 11:43 AM, not releasing it until 10:17 PM on October 11, 1940, so the Moon's sign changed on the birth date, as for about 44% of the decade, yet holds for any evening time.

| Basis for that assessment | Lennon's own statement of the hour to the astrologer Roger Elliot in 1969, said to have been confirmed by his aunt Mimi Smith, who raised him, as reported in a named book; English birth certificates of the period carry no time, so no register hour is expected. |
| Where the time comes from | Lennon told the British astrologer Roger Elliot, when he and Yoko Ono consulted him in 1969, that he was born at 6.30 p.m., and the historian of astrology Nicholas Campion reports that his aunt Mimi confirmed it. Ray Coleman's 1984 biography, written with Mimi's help, gives the same hour, and Mark Lewisohn's 2013 history judges 6.30 p.m. the most likely time. |

Mercury in Scorpio at the apex of a fixed T-square
The Moon (3°32′ Aquarius) and Pluto (4°11′ Leo) face each other 0°38′ from an exact opposition, and Mercury, at 8°33′ Scorpio, sits square to both, to Pluto by 4°22′ and the Moon by 5°00′: a T-square, a figure found in about one chart in 7 from the 1940s, here laid across three fixed signs. Textbooks make the apex planet the one that absorbs the opposition's strain, so a Mercury apex is glossed as pressure turned into words and argument.
Jupiter and Saturn sit near the empty point at 8°33′ Taurus and both oppose Mercury, yet neither squares the Moon or Pluto, so no grand cross forms. At either morning time the Moon is too far from a square to Mercury, 10°24′ off at 7:00 AM, and the figure disappears.

The Sun just under the western horizon, three retrograde planets in the first house
The Sun at 16°16′ Libra sits in the 6th house, on the lower side of the Descendant at 19°46′ Libra and 3°30′ from it; Suns this near an angle, five degrees or less, turn up in about one chart in 9 from the decade. It is the chart's most fragile house placement: 6 minutes earlier, it would be in the 7th house. Uranus comes next: it would cross into the 2nd house if Lennon had arrived 13 minutes sooner; every other planet holds its house for at least 26 minutes either way.
Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus are retrograde together in Taurus in the first house, behind an Ascendant at 19°46′ Aries that moved a degree every 1.6 minutes. The 6th house holds four planets: the Sun, Mars and, in intercepted Virgo, Venus and Neptune. No planet is out of bounds: Pluto's 23°07′ north is the widest declination, inside the Sun's own limit of 23°26′. Eclipses bracket the birth, a total solar one on October 1, 1940 and a penumbral lunar one on October 16, 1940, the second inside a week, as in about one chart in 6 of 1940s births.

The Moon alone as the handle of a bucket
All but one of the ten planets crowd into an arc of 175°20′, Saturn at one end in Taurus and Mercury at the other in Scorpio, while the Moon sits alone 99°40′ short of Saturn. Marc Edmund Jones called this a bucket, its lone planet the handle through which the chart is directed; here the handle is also the T-square's Moon.
Of twelve points counted, earth takes six, fixed signs six, and water only Mercury. Below the horizon lie eight planets, with just the Moon and Mercury above, though with the Sun minutes under the line that tally is fragile.

A night chart by 6 minutes, with the Sun in its fall
The site calls a chart nocturnal when the Sun is in houses one to six, which makes this a night chart by 6 minutes. The margin matters to astrologers who work with sect: by night the Moon leads the chart's sect, with Venus and Mars on its side, leaving the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn on the other side.
Traditional dignities put the Sun in its fall in Libra, shared by about one chart in 12 from the 1940s; Venus is in fall in Virgo, and Mars, which rules this chart, is in detriment in Libra, as the essential dignities calculator shows. On the site's strength score Mercury leads at 62, helped by its angular 7th house; it also holds the title Lord of the Geniture. Mars ranks last at 27, cadent and under the beams 13°36′ from the Sun, though swift and in sect, while Mercury, 22°17′ from the Sun, is clear of them.

From the Woolton fete to the Dakota in eleven dates
The record dates eleven public events with sources, spanning twenty-three years. The first is July 6, 1957, when Lennon's skiffle group the Quarrymen played the St Peter's Church garden fete in Woolton and he first met Paul McCartney. Five years later the partnership had a record deal: the Beatles' first single, Love Me Do, came out in the UK on October 5, 1962, and their debut album, Please Please Me, followed on March 22, 1963.
The American breakthrough came on February 9, 1964, when the Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show before more than 73 million viewers. Six weeks later, on March 23, 1964, Lennon published his first book of writings and drawings, In His Own Write. The touring years closed on August 29, 1966, with the band's final paid concert, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
The solo dates begin with Give Peace a Chance, recorded during the Montreal bed-in and released as a Plastic Ono Band single on July 4, 1969. His first solo studio album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, followed on December 11, 1970, and the album Imagine reached American shops on September 9, 1971. After a five-year break he returned with Double Fantasy, made with Yoko Ono and released on November 17, 1980. Three weeks later, on December 8, 1980, he was shot and killed outside the Dakota building in New York City, aged 40.

Bachchan, Harris, Mangeshkar and Gandhi: four Libra Suns nearest in the databank
Ranked by shared Sun, Moon and rising signs, then by how close the Sun through Saturn sit on average, none of the four nearest charts in the databank matches Lennon on more than the Libra Sun. Amitabh Bachchan leads on closeness (Sun within 2° of each other), Lata Mangeshkar adds a near match in Venus (Venus within 1° of each other), and Kamala Harris and Mahatma Gandhi share the Libra Sun alone. Nobody in the databank was born on October 9, 1940.
Lahiri positions: a Virgo Sun, a Capricorn Moon and Pisces rising
In Jyotish, with the Lahiri ayanamsa of 23°01′ for this date, the Sun drops back to 23°14′ Virgo, the Moon sits at 10°30′ Capricorn, and the rising degree becomes 26°44′ Pisces. That gives Pisces rising, which would turn to sidereal Aries with a birth 6 minutes later. Jupiter and Saturn shift back into Aries; Venus becomes a Leo placement and Mars a Virgo one.

Lennon's three Jupiter returns and one Saturn return
Saturn returned to its natal 13°12′ Taurus on May 11, 1970, at age 29.6, a single direct pass in the year of his first solo album. Jupiter came back to 13°41′ Taurus three times: in three passes from June 30, 1952 to February 15, 1953, then on June 10, 1964 and May 23, 1976. Lennon died at 40, before a second Saturn return.

Questions about John Lennon’s birth chart
What is John Lennon's zodiac sign?
Libra. The Sun stayed in Libra through all of October 9, 1940, so his Sun sign does not depend on the hour of birth.
What is John Lennon's Moon sign?
Aquarius, at the 6:30 PM hour he gave. Only from 11:43 AM on October 9 was the Moon in Aquarius; an earlier, morning birth would give a Capricorn Moon.
What is John Lennon's rising sign?
Aries, if the remembered 6:30 PM hour is right. The Aries window on that Liverpool evening ran from 5:59 PM to 6:47 PM; a later birth brings Taurus, and the unsourced morning times give Libra.
How certain is John Lennon's Aries rising sign?
The hour is Lennon's own, given to Roger Elliot in 1969 and, in Campion's account, confirmed by his aunt Mimi. Aries occupied the Liverpool Ascendant between 5:59 PM and 6:47 PM, so the sign survives a true time up to 30 minutes earlier, but a birth 18 minutes later brings up Taurus. The unsourced morning times give Libra.
What ranks first in John Lennon's birth chart?
The Sun: from 16°16′ Libra it makes no conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to any other planet, and simulated 1940s births show that in about one chart in 21. Its only contacts are minor quincunxes to Jupiter and Saturn and the opposition to the Ascendant. The matching condition of Venus holds at any hour; the Sun's depends on it.
Which signs hold John Lennon's Sun and Moon in Vedic (Lahiri) astrology?
Lahiri's ayanamsa, the standard in Indian astrology, shifts the Sun to 23°14′ Virgo and the Moon to 10°30′ Capricorn, each one sign behind its tropical place. The sidereal Ascendant, 26°44′ Pisces, makes Pisces rising. This page follows the tropical zodiac: Libra Sun, Aquarius Moon, Aries rising.
Where every figure on this page comes from
Positions were worked out for 17:30 UTC on October 9, 1940 at 53°24′ N, 2°57′ W, the Oxford Street hospital, with precise astronomical calculations, the tropical zodiac and Placidus houses; the site's chart API agrees (difference < 0.0002°), and the wartime offset comes from London's time-zone history. Each rate sets this chart beside a large sample of invented 1940s birth moments in cities around the world, with house, angle and horizon features scaled to latitudes of 45-60 degrees, run through the same code, and measures frequency only. Astro-Databank's entry has not been used.
