The Venus Line in Astrocartography
Many people look up their Venus lines first. An astrocartography map draws four of them, through the places where Venus was rising, setting, overhead or underfoot at your birth, and astrocartographers read them for love and friendship, art and design, money spent on pleasure, and a general sense that life runs smoothly. The Venus Descendant line, where Venus was setting, gets more attention than the other three because the Descendant is the angle of partnership.
No line comes with a promise. A Venus line is a reading of a place, the same way a Venus placement is a reading of a birth chart, and astrocartographers describe it as a tendency to meet people easily and enjoy yourself there, not as a guarantee of meeting anyone. What can be pinned down exactly is where the lines run, and why a Venus line can sit far from where a quick glance at the chart would suggest. This page works through both with Barack Obama's chart.
Barack Obama's Venus Lines
Obama's birth certificate puts his birth at 7:24 PM in Honolulu on August 4, 1961, which was 05:24 UTC the next day. Venus was at 1°47′ Cancer, a morning star rising ahead of the Sun. The site's API, called the way the astrocartography map calls it, returned the four lines below, and a script compared each of their points with the Swiss Ephemeris before measuring the distance from every city in the site's list.
Venus DSC line: Bering Sea, New Guinea and the Australian outback
DSCThe line people call the love line runs, in this chart, through sea and desert. At 60° N it is in the Bering Sea off western Alaska, at 163°56′ W. It crosses the Aleutian chain and the northwest Pacific, reaches the equator at 147°25′ E north of New Guinea, comes ashore on the north coast of Papua New Guinea, crosses the tip of Cape York and the Gulf of Carpentaria, and runs down through the empty center of Australia and the outback of South Australia to the Great Australian Bight. The site's city list has nothing within 200 km of it; Darwin, far to its west, and Adelaide, far to its east, are the nearest large Australian cities.
The standard reading is simple: with Venus on the cusp of the relocated seventh house, the angle of marriage and partnership, the line is a place where you attract partners easily, where relationships start with mutual liking, and where you tend to meet people who are kind, good-looking or artistic. The caution comes from Venus itself: a line of ease can also be a line of choosing the agreeable partner over the right one, and of keeping a comfortable relationship past its time.
A Descendant line that runs mostly through sea and desert is common, and Obama's shows what practitioners do with one: they look at the crossings it makes with other lines and at the relocated charts of the places where people actually live, rather than at the empty stretch itself.
Venus ASC line: Hudson Bay to Cape Breton, then the Atlantic
ASCThe rising line comes down from Nunavut across Hudson Bay and eastern Quebec, crosses Cape Breton Island 51 km from Sydney, Nova Scotia (the only listed city that close), and then stays at sea for the whole length of the Atlantic, passing the equator at 32°34′ W. Near the bottom of the map it turns east, reaching 16°03′ E at 60° S.
On the Ascendant Venus is read as charm and looks: a place where you come across as warm and attractive, dress and present yourself with more care, and find people well disposed toward you before you have done anything to earn it. The downside of the same placement is vanity and indolence, a place where it is easy to coast on being liked.
Venus IC line: the West Coast along 122°34′ W
ICHis busiest Venus line is the meridian of 122°34′ W, which runs straight down the Pacific coast of North America. It passes 39 km from Vancouver and close to Victoria, 18 km from Seattle and near Tacoma, 8 km from Portland and near Salem and Eugene, and then through the Bay Area, 14 km from San Francisco and 60 km from San Jose, with Santa Rosa, Sacramento and Stockton nearby. Below San Francisco it heads out to sea, passing west of San Jose and Monterey Bay.
Placed at the IC, Venus describes a lovely home and an easy family life: a house you enjoy improving, a place to entertain, and property that tends to hold its value. Lilly's fourth house covers "lands, houses, tenements, inheritances" as well as fathers, so a benefic there has long been taken as a good sign for property. The quiet risk is comfort that makes it hard to leave.
In Honolulu Venus was still some way from this angle at the birth: the Swiss Ephemeris has it crossing the lower meridian 2 hours 21 minutes after the birth, at 9:45 PM, which is why the line lies 35°16′ of longitude east of Honolulu.

Venus MC line: the Urals to the Gulf of Oman
MCThe opposite meridian, 57°25′ E, runs from the Urals near Perm (69 km), Yekaterinburg and Ufa, past Aktobe in Kazakhstan (16 km), and across Turkmenistan near Ashgabat. In Iran it passes west of Mashhad and 33 km from Kerman, reaches the coast east of Bandar Abbas, crosses the Gulf of Oman just east of the Strait of Hormuz, and comes ashore in Oman west of Muscat (100 km).
At the Midheaven, Venus suggests a career with grace in it: work in the arts, design, fashion, beauty, hospitality, diplomacy and anything that depends on being liked. Tradition counts Venus as the lesser of the two benefics, after Jupiter, and a benefic at the top of the chart has long been read as favor from people with influence. The caution is a career that rests on charm and connections more than on the work.

Morning Star and Evening Star
Venus orbits inside the Earth's orbit, so it never appears far from the Sun: its greatest elongation, the widest angle it opens from the Sun, is about 46° to 47°. When it is west of the Sun it rises before dawn as the morning star, and when it is east it sets after dusk as the evening star. On a map the same tether holds the lines: each Venus line runs within reach of the matching Sun line. In our scan of every day from 1900 to 2050, the widest separation between the Venus MC line and the Sun MC line was 50°58′ of longitude, on November 29, 1917: a little more than the elongation, because the zodiac meets the equator at an angle.
Obama's Venus was 40°45′ west of the Sun, near the morning-star end of its range, and its meridians sit 43°03′ to the west of the Sun's. It had been retrograde in the spring of 1961, stationing retrograde on March 20, 1961 at 29°05′ Aries and direct on May 2, 1961 at 12°44′ Aries; by August it was well clear of the Sun and moving 1°08′ a day. So if you know only that your Venus was a morning or an evening star, you already know which side of your Sun lines to look for it.
Why Venus Lines Can Curve So Much
The shape of a rising or setting line depends on the declination of the planet's zodiac degree, how far north or south of the equator that degree lies in the sky. A degree near 0° Aries or 0° Libra sits on the equator and gives almost straight rising and setting lines; a degree near 0° Cancer or 0° Capricorn is as far from it as the zodiac goes and gives the most strongly curved ones. Obama's Venus at 1°47′ Cancer is just past the solstice point, with a declination of 23°25′ north, almost the full tilt of the Earth's axis.
The result shows in the table. Between 60° S and 60° N his Venus rising line swings through 97°17′ of longitude. His Mars, at 22°34′ Virgo, has a degree only 2°56′ north of the equator and a rising line that moves just 10°13′ over the same range. At 66° N, the top edge of the map, the Venus rising line has bent to within 13°15′ of the Venus IC line, the start of the hook such lines make near the polar circle, where a degree this far north barely sets.

When Venus Leaves the Ecliptic
The site's lines are zodiacal: they follow Venus's degree on the ecliptic and set aside its latitude. Jim Lewis drew his maps from the planet itself, in mundo. For Venus the difference can be large, because when Venus passes between the Earth and the Sun it is only about a quarter of an astronomical unit away and its small orbital tilt looks large from here. In our scan from 1900 to 2050, its greatest distance north of the ecliptic was 8°43′ on March 13, 2049, with Venus 0.28 AU from Earth and 3°54′ from the Sun; the southern record, 8°43′, came on September 12, 1919.
Someone born in those weeks has Venus lines whose two versions sit far apart. Obama is not one of them. His Venus was 1.06 AU away and 1°47′ south of the ecliptic. Because it sat near the solstice, almost all of that latitude went into declination rather than right ascension, so the meridian lines barely move (0°01′); the curved lines move by up to 290 km at 60° N:
| Latitude | Rising line moves | Setting line moves |
|---|---|---|
| 45° S | 2°20′ west (184 km) | 2°17′ east (180 km) |
| 30° S | 1°16′ west (123 km) | 1°13′ east (118 km) |
| Equator | 0°01′ west (3 km) | 0°01′ west (3 km) |
| 30° N | 1°13′ east (118 km) | 1°16′ west (123 km) |
| 45° N | 2°17′ east (180 km) | 2°20′ west (184 km) |
| 60° N | 5°13′ east (290 km) | 5°16′ west (293 km) |
How Close Is Close Enough?
Jim Lewis's own figure for a line's reach grew over time. His 1976 handbook spoke of a quarter of an inch either side on his maps, roughly 300 to 400 miles; his 1982 Cyclo*Carto*Graphy handbook said experience suggested up to 700 miles. Even at that widest setting, Obama's four Venus lines reach just 304 of the site's 2,292 cities (13%), the fewest for any of his ten planets, because two of the four spend nearly their whole length at sea.
A time error moves all four lines together, 0°59′ west for every four minutes, so a West Coast city that sits 8 km from the line on a correct birth time could be well off it on a time rounded to the nearest half hour. Check the birth time before choosing between nearby cities, and use the pre-filled map to see how the Venus lines sit beside his Sun and Mars lines.
Where is your Venus line?
Your own four Venus lines take a birth date, time and place; the map draws them with the other thirty-six and measures their distance from any place you look up.
Venus Line FAQ
What does the Venus DSC line mean in astrocartography?
It runs where Venus was setting at your birth, so in a chart cast for those places Venus sits on the Descendant, where the chart shows partners, and the line is read as a place where relationships start easily and you meet people who are kind, attractive or artistic. The caution is choosing comfort over fit.
Will I find love on my Venus line?
Nobody can promise that. Astrocartographers describe a Venus line, and especially the Venus Descendant line, as a place where meeting people and enjoying their company comes more easily. That is a reading in the astrological tradition, not a measured effect, so treat it as one consideration beside work, cost of living and the people you already know.
How far from my Sun lines can my Venus lines be?
Not very far. Venus never strays more than about 47° from the Sun, and our scan of every day from 1900 to 2050 found the two MC lines at most 50°58′ of longitude apart. A morning-star Venus has its lines west of the Sun lines; an evening-star Venus, east.
What does a Venus IC line mean for home life?
A beautiful, comfortable home and an easy family life, by the usual reading, and good luck with property. Barack Obama's Venus IC line runs along 122°34′ W, through Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Why does my Venus line bend so much?
Rising and setting lines bend according to the declination of the planet's zodiac degree. Degrees near the solstices, early Cancer or early Capricorn, bend the most. Obama's Venus at 1°47′ Cancer gives a rising line that swings 97°17′ of longitude between 60° S and 60° N, against 10°13′ for his Mars near the equinox degree.
